I haven’t played some games that would top other people’s list (eg. fallout). I probably missed something deserving; I almost missed Nights into Dreams, Shovel Knight and Sonic Mania this time.

Crazy Taxi would have been much higher it if it kept the original soundtrack. Also Warlords would be on but it’s awful without a paddle controller. And never played the first Quiplash but I’m sure it would make the list if I had. Second one is one of the best party games ever made.

I tried to give a little weight toward what games are genuinely better but for the most part it’s ranked in order of my favorites. For instance, Sonic Mania I think is probably a better game than the original Sonic, but if I had to choose between the two I’d stick with the original. And I think Sonic Adventure is really a pretty bad game (let me finish!) but I still love it so it makes the list, albeit closer to the bottom than if I ranked purely in order of favorites.

I agree that Sonic Mania is probably a "better" game, but the first Sonic is kind of a perfect thing and total comfort food for me. I also agree that Sonic Adventure is kind of a "bad" game, but I totally like it haha.

As far as having not played some of the classics, that's also kind of why I'm interested in compiling this list. For instance this discussion is leading me to finally look into the Fallout series (Fallout 4 is on its way to me now - thanks Omerta!), so I'd be interested in compiling this list and then doing it again next year and seeing how the rankings might change as we each no doubt would have experienced more games by then.

Hopefully MS sticks with the game plan and becomes the de facto Steam of consoles. That would definitely make lists like these much more useful.

I’m way less hesitant about buying digital games on Xbox because of their willingness to accommodate me on most of my old purchases.

agree totally. I really think their commitment to bc has been fantastic. And if their goal going forward is to keep the platform basically just an upgraded box that still plays those same games we're playing now, then it's easier to want to stick with them.

Since this thread resulted in noise getting his first stab at a Fallout title, I'll derail it a bit more with some Fallout 4 tips to help our little noob buddy enjoy it further.

1) On the recent Fallouts, I tend put a lot of early points into lock-picking, hacking, and speech type skills. This helps the completionist in me by not having to remember to open something later and can give me deeper story options and better rewards when talking to people.

2) Speaking of hacking, beyond just randomly picking words there are other methods to a successful hack by selecting bracketed jibberish or backing out of a terminal to reset numbers of tries. See here: https://attackofthefanboy.com/guides/fa ... computers/

3) Save often. This game will save the entire world right at an exact point which you can reload at anytime to abuse conversation options and re-do tough battles to save ammo.

4) Learn to love the power armor. Once you get a steady supply of fusion cores to power them, it makes the game quite a bit easier and the stat boosts make it so you don't have to spend your levels on them as much. Also try to find things that make the cores last longer.

5) Always remove your fusion core before leaving your power armor frame. They're like keys to a car in a sketchy neighborhood. If you leave them in, enemies and allies both will take off with them and leave you wondering where it went.

6) Find a good supplier of fusion cores and spend most of your caps on them. Visit these guys frequently.

7) Use VATS often. This is a gameplay mechanic that allows you to slow time down and target enemies for a pre-determined number of accurate attacks that reduces the need for constant high speed FPS gameplay. (I talked my brother into playing Fallout 3 and he hated it until he figured out how to use VATS.)

thanks, dude. Fallout 4 is currently sitting in a short stack of stuff I plan to play soon-ish. I was actually telling my wife about it over the weekend and she was like "Sci-fi... Skyrim... Boston... yeah, I'm surprised you haven't played this game yet." Haha.

As for the OP, I find the list fairly interesting. Taking a look at the top 10 even is pretty neat blend of genres and years.
