Re: Teacher By Day; Gamer By Night
It’s so crazy to me that you like Rescue Rangers 2 more. You mention verticality and it seems like you’re saying that the levels have that as opposed to the original. Is that what you meant? Because the original has a ton of vertical areas.
Also I think maybe you were just used to the physics after playing the first one. Having played them both several times I’m pretty sure they have the exact same controls and physics. I think the developers just took the existing game and made new levels.
I’ll agree with you that the way you fight the bosses feels more organic in this one, having items appear to throw rather than just a handy red ball always there. I personally find them harder than the original but that’s probably because I’ve played the original so much. I also, however, find them much less fun than in the original. The original had strange creatures like an alien ship, a weird squid thing, a big toy robot and a caterpillar that broke its body apart to attack, while the sequel just has generic animal bad guys like bunny with gun, weasel with gun, cat that flies, um... another cat, ghost cat, and robot cat. Only a couple bosses in the sequel seemed at all interesting while I always enjoy seeing them in the first.
The levels in the sequel all seem very generic to me too. Many of the levels in the original have mechanics unique to the level and they all have very distinct scenery and obstacles. The second one has themed levels but they all look and play about the same; they just slapped on a new coat of paint in each level.
I know I have a lot of nostalgia for the original—I grew up with it—but I just don’t like the sequel at all. Maybe without the nostalgia I’d just dislike both of them. Haha

The balance and integration between horizontal scrolling and vertical scrolling in the second one felt a lot better designed to me. As for the control, it may well have been placebo effect - it's a sequel, so I expect it to be more refined - but I definitely felt like the jumps and landings felt just a little tighter and more responsive in the second game.
