Wait, why is this a good thing? If I had to choose between giving up video games or giving up books, video games would be out the door in a split second.aaron wrote:RPGs - including adventure/action rpgs ala zelda, etc. i also like these because they keep me from reading books.
If you could only play three genres, what would they be?

Easy
Platformers
RPGs(not just japanese ones mind you)
some form of beat'em up/hack n slashers(I'll include games like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry into this category)
Also, any combination of the above would make me happy
Every other genre I dabble in from time to time, but am not really dedicated too

Role-playing games
First-person shooters
Sports
Honestly, they all provide the most gameplay for me. Nothing wrong with platformers and action games, but I just don't get enthralled with them regularly. I'm more likely to complete an average game from one of the above genres than I am from other genres.

welp, it's simply because we are different people who choose to spend our time in different ways.marurun wrote:Wait, why is this a good thing? Re: If you could only play three genres, what would they be?
I really only stick to 3 genres for myself at this point in time:
Sh'mup
Platformer
Puzzle
RPG was once in my list, but since RPG went 3D I lost interest and I've played nearly all the 2D ones I care about. Downside to RPG in my book is they have very little replay value.

Platformer - Mostly of the 2d Mario variety.
RPG - Deep inside, I'm really just a nerd. I like stats and stories.
Strategy - Though this genre is mostly limited to Civ II for me. It's the only strategy game I play aside from the occasional Heroes of Might and Magic II campaign. I can waste so much time if I pick either of those games up.

Re: If you could only play three genres, what would they be?
Hmm... I think I pretty much do only play 3 genres, but they are:
RPG: Inclusive of action, strategy and straight up RPG. Lately I've been playing a lot of action RPGs, especially if they have co-op.
Beat-em-up: I never really get tired of the good ones, and I couldn't be happy without being able to play Guardian Heroes.
Simulation/Strategy: I combine these b/c there is quite a bit of overlap. I'm talking about games like Settlers, The Guild, etc.; not really RTS--more heavy on the economic sim aspects.
Right now that's basically what I play but I'll sprinkle in a few FPS co-op sessions and the occasional platformer or round of Smash Bros.

Fighter
Shmup
RPG
I used to play these genres almost exclusively for quite awhile.

RPG
Fighter (assuming I have a good friend to play it and smack talk too)
Action
I already play RPGs rather exclusively. Fighters are fantastic fun if you have a friend, otherwise FPS's. Action games are just great for beating the crap out of people
