MGS3 is also where the Kabuki makeup is from I think (there are select times where some of those worked well, I think I used the skull or Oyama for the final boss).
...and to be fair, MGSV features gold as unlocks as well (for S ranking certain things AFAIK), or customizations...
Gold Quiet...
Remember, this is a game where you can paint your helicopter in pastels and go into battle blaring 80s tunes over the megaphone.
Ultimately, the real point is that... the big Metal Gear Survive update was this image of DLC shenanigans and a release date. No trailer, no soul to be found anywhere. Did anyone seriously remember that this game was still even a thing coming out? I know I forgot about it.
Nah, I saw it, so I wasn't figuring it was a serious conversation or anything, it just seemed to have turned more into where Konami was pulling this stuff from. In fairness, the game model itself may be odd for the series, but as you likely recall, they really are just taking stuff that was already in MGSV to some degree and doing a spinoff. An ill-advised spinoff as it may well be.
so I've got Phantom Pain on my to play (again) in the near-ish future list, however I wanted to ask about Ground Zeroes. How much does GZ add to the experience of playing Phantom Pain? Notice I didn't say "story," because well, I've never been able to follow Metal Gear lore all that well anyway, haha. But knowing the GZ is such a short game, I'm just wondering if there's anything that makes it totally worth playing BEFORE Phantom Pain?
To back up slightly, the timeline for the games is basically MGS3 -> Portable Ops (though it's basically ignored) -> Peace Walker -> Ground Zeroes -> The Phantom Pain. Since it's set so early in the timeline, I'd say the story isn't really as hard to get a handle on, and a few side-story type things will be odd if you aren't at all familiar with MGS3 or Peace Walker.
More or less, MGS3 sees Naked Snake earn/inherit the title of Big Boss, but get disillusioned with the military organization in the process. The PSP entries have him going out and forming his own mercenary army, and eventually being betrayed. Quite a lot of that is compressed into Ground Zeroes. You're rescuing characters from Peace Walker, one of which - if you delve into the recordings and stuff - you'll find was spying on you. Still, the villain for MGSV is introduced, and all of what was built up in the previous game gets torn down. The actual mission in Ground Zeroes aside, it certainly sets the stage for The Phantom Pain. If you have it, I'd say to play it first - if not, maybe watch the cutscenes on Youtube or something.
Do keep in mind that MGSV is a much longer game than anything else in the series, and has a second "season" after the credits initially roll to boot. I also found it a lot better to play if I wasn't trying to free roam as much.
Quite a lot of that is compressed into Ground Zeroes.
I had to read that sentence three times before my brain understood that you hadn't typed "Quiet."
Actually, yeah I actually played some of PP last year, and started out thinking it was awesome but then got burnt out. And I think a lot of that had to do with how big the game is, and the fact that at the time I was playing there were other games coming out that were also trying to get my attention. But I've been thinking about giving it another shot sometime soon.
I don't have a copy of Ground Zeroes, but it seems like it's rather easy to find on the cheap. There is also a certain appeal to games that you can "beat" in an evening. There's not as many of those any more, so I do kind of like the change of pace there. Maybe it would work well as an appetizer before getting back to Phantom Pain.
Story wise GZ serves as a narrative link between Peace Walker and Phantom Pain. Gameplay wise it's basically an like the EP to Phantom Pain's LP. Proof of concept of the new engine and the open world. I like it a lot and it's a cool curio but it isn't essential. If you've already played any PP there won't be anything new though.
well I won't be getting back to MGSV until I'm done w/ GTA5's story - and by then it may be time for Feb's Together Retro so I'll be focused on FF Type-0. But Phantom Pain is def queued up for ASAP. I guess I'll decide whether or not to play Ground Zeroes first between now and then, and it'll probably just depend on if I happen upon a cheap copy.
ANYWAY, I just got an email announcing that the Metal Gear: Survive beta is now open on Xbox One (maybe on PC & PS4 as well? I'm not sure). I know it doesn't seem like there's a lot of excitement surrounding this game, but I am definitely curious and am remotely downloading the beta now so that it's ready to roll when I get home tonight. Beta runs briefly from today through January 21st so I'll try to squeeze it in, although I've got a pretty busy weekend ahead.
