The series has done it before, but ultimately you're right. I say this all as someone who's been playing Mario for 25+ years, so yeah.

I got a little over 600 moons myself and felt content after that.

You guys are crazy, Mario Odyssey is a blast.

And if you think the levels are the same size as the tiny levels in Mario 64 I think it’s been a bit too long since you’ve played that one. I remember when I played Sunshine I felt gypped that it had so many fewer levels than Mario 64, then I went back to Mario 64 and realized how small the levels really are. It felt bigger at the time. Trust me you could probably fit all of Mario 64 into a single one of the big Odyssey levels.

And Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is the best Donkey Kong Country game. I still enjoy the Super Nintendo ones but I wouldn’t say they’ve aged super gracefully.

I don’t know that I really have any unpopular gaming opinions though now that I think about it. The masses tell me what to like and I like it!

Oh I want to make it quite clear tgat no one is saying that mario odyssey is bad. It is just not as huge a leap compared to games like breath of the wild.

Although I loved Odyssey, I completely agree with Xeogred here. I have nothing to add, you summed up my thoughts too.

MO is amazing. Sunshine absolutely sucks. Watching Giant Bomb play it reminded me of all the problems I had with that game. I'm still amazed Nintendo made such a sloppy game for their standards of polish. I wasn't a fan of the Galaxy games either, mainly because they were not Mario 64 in letting me fully explore. That's why MO is so great. Huge worlds to explore. You must not have played Mario 64 in 20 years to think those small worlds even compare to MO's size. The desert one alone is bigger than the first big areas in Nier Automata. The bosses are better than anything I played in a 3D Mario before. A couple feels like a lost Zelda boss. Then we had the Demons Souls Dragon..sure it was weird but I like that MO embraces this weirdness like real humans. Nintendo made that work somehow where SEGA failed in Sonic 06.

Most of the desert one is just empty space though... It's a bit weird seeing so much empty space in a Mario game.

Wow harsh, Sunshine was a good game. It did have spots that had infuriating lesser quality of polish but it was fewer and farther between. That damn pachinko game you got into for a shine made me want to throw the controller through the tv though as the camera was suicidally setup to fail in that.

Odyssey is fantastic, but I have to agree, it isn't a lightyears away jump in quality or difference from the past. IT did take a few notes, but very few from Breath of the Wild which was like the biggest franchise change up like ever from Nintendo and done in such beautiful attention to detail style.

I just think Odyssey is 3d platforming perfected, it is not as innovative as Mario 64, and does not drive its genre forward the way breath of the wild did, but I had a smile on my face every step of the way. Cappy is a great innovation and the ability to posses enemies is far more fun than any costume in any other mario game was. My only disappointment were the boss battles, the bunnies were all pretty lame(cute but lame), some of the other bosses were great but it was a mixed bag. Having said that, the bowser fight is hands down the best in the entire series and just made me smile in a way that no game other than Mario can.

Honestly, Breath of the Wild was insane, and if within the same year Nintendo tried to recreate its other huge IP, I just don't see it going well. I think the combo of "Holy crap all new Zelda" and "Damn comfy 3D Mario platforming" was perfect for Nintendo's year one. Plus, they just threw Mario into X-Com the same year!

Some games don't need to blow brain, for me. Sometimes familiar and comfortable can exceed innovation, and Mario Odyssey was basically just what I wanted it to be.

Yeah. I'm biased for Zelda and I didn't go into Odyssey for a revelation, I guess ultimately to put it simply... I loved Odyssey, but not as much as all the other 3D Mario's (outside of Sunshine). I don't see myself returning it to much though, which is kind of my complaint earlier about the back half. I'm sure others love just running back through the worlds picking up moons though, but I like how in 3D World or whatnot you just straight up get brand new levels to play. I would have rather had some newer levels after the end instead, not counting the boss rush or level gauntlet since I'm not a fan of those. lol
