I really enjoyed Devil man crybaby. Was definitely different and haven't seen something like it before. Are any of the other devilman series similar?

Devilman Crybaby would have been better if it were more spread out is my issue there is a clear point at which the show really should have ended and instead they rush past it at break neck speed and shit the bed completely trying to reach what ends up being a very rushed and poorly done conclusion from which point there is no way to continue the series farther.

As for the gore and nudity it has it's place and there are plenty of moments where it's very well done. However there are other scenes were they go a bit to far. The nudity/sex is really graphic and this isn't a show I could see anyone viewing in a group without creating a really awkward atmosphere. I had to about mute the volume a number of times because it went full blown porno with loud moaning and sound effects that would have been hard to explain had other family members walked in . As for the violence for the first half of the show they use it pretty well however during the second half they seem to go a step to far and it just gets to the point that it's numbing and they get a little to pushy with it. There are multiple pivotal scenes involving the fates of specific characters that you are meant to care about fall flat because they push it a little to far either by making characters make nonsensical choices or desecrating the corpses for no reason.

Which brings up another issue. None of the characters are really developed all that well. There are a few that get close to having a developed back story but for the most part most of them are just paper thin cliches that are used to push the plot along.

Altogether I still enjoyed the majority of the show I just and wish they had taken their time with it. The characters could have really used more fleshing out and the extremely rushed last few episodes really did what could have been an interesting series a great injustice.

Spoiler talk.
I really think the show should have ended with the track event. After that things just go to shit plot holes pop up everywhere, the pacing goes to shit, and they just starting killing off the cast way to fast. They should have just ended it with Akira recruiting Koda and starting to question Ryo's motives. Then season 2 could have dealt with the humans reaction to the discovery of demons and ended with the holy nuke light which never clearly gets explained. Sure Ryo says God is only targeting demons with the light but then the world gets basically destroyed during the ending  . Then they could have ended with a season three where Akira builds up his army of Devilmen and faces off with Satan and his demon horde. That would have been a show I could stand behind. The way things stand though I can say episode 1-6 are good, 7-9 are okay but very rushed, and episode 10 shits the bed and about ruins the experience.

As for the over doing it with the gore that I was mentioning it was things like Miki's corpse being paraded about. Her death scene was very well done and emotional and then they had to go and dismember her corpse and parade it about for shock value  .

My Impression of Burn Up Excess

Post by johnblade »

Image
Follows the exploits of Team Warrior, a special anti-terror wing of the Neo-Tokyo Police force. Team Warrior is comprised of the habitually broke Rio, gun-crazy Maya, computer specialist Lillica, tech-expert Nanvel, piliot/voyeur Yuji, and is led by the enigmatic Maki. The team faces a number of missions, ranging from bodyguard duty, breaking up robbery and arms rackets, and providing security for a very powerful tank. Rio and company continually thwart the terrorist aims of Ruby, an operative for a shadowy cabal of powerful men. Before the final showdown, the circumstances behind the formation of Team Warrior, how the precocious Rio came to join it, and Maki's painful past will be revealed.

Burn Up Excess is a 13 episode TV from the Burn Up franchise. It kinda follow the timeline of the series and like the previous impression of Burn Up! W, it feel like a low tier police crime fighting babes kicking ass show when they're quite a few of this type of show and some are more popular than this show like You're Under Arrest.

The plot of the story is similar to the previous OVA, Burn Up! W. You follow a team of police office under the name of Warrior whose main mission can range from normal average police crime to full blown terrorist attack. The story do feel generic and didn't help it start like a episodic in the beginning where you're introduce a bad guy and just watch the team kick their ass while at the same time, sprinkle some comedy skirt here and there and a big fan service of the female characters. Man....the fan service get more and more as you get closer to the end of the show to the point you're basically see almost all the female character fully nude  . Thankfully, they is a major evil plot at the background of the show which get interesting and become clear around half way of the show. By this time, the show start to take more serious tone and less "bad guy of the week" feel which do help the show quite a bit.

The development for the main character is much better here than the OVA as each character has their own personality and more refined . This is done by having an episode which target one of the main character of the show and develop them much more even if it's kinda generic and odd when you watch it. Even the odd personalities, it's much better than the OVA which you feel every character is basically the same. I think the best development character is going to be the head of the Warrior as you actually found out more of her past and the connection between her and the incident of her past and the current situation of the show. In a way, she might be the better character in the entire show.

Animation wise it's nothing much to discuss. It's average and work fine for the TV show at the time. They will be repeat animation scene which I notice from few episode which is funny to see. The animation do get a bit more detail at the final episode for the big fight scene and also the fan service scene which start to take up quite a bit of the show and you notice they is a much detail work on the breast, bra, panties, woman figure, etc (basically any fan service scene) .

Overall, the show is okay. I got entertain watching the show and do remind a bit of You're Under Arrest TV show. The show have enough stuff to keep you entertaining when watching and didn't stay too long with it while at the same time give you some serious story later on the show which did get me watching a bit. Much better than the OVA but not something people will remember it once they finish watching it.

johnblade you HAVE seen Dirty Pair, Iria, Bubblegum Crisis (Gunsmith Cat and Riding Bean if you like this artist too), Birdy the Mighty, and then perhaps Gall Force... right? Those are all way better versions of this other stuff you're watching.

Like you said at the end of your review there, I've seen some Burn Up... some of the OVA's or something. But I seriously can't remember which installment since it's so forgettable.

I've been meaning to check out You're Under Arrest someday.

I have watch Iria and Gunsmith Cat (great show that I have go back watching it if I ever get bored). Dirty Pair, Bubblegum Crisis, and Birdy the Mighty is in my physical anime collection which I need to go watch once I get through my massive backlogged of show right now which need to get through this year.

I do have one more show in this franchise but I might put it on hold and go watch another anime show in my back logged or just go back watching Black Lagoon season 2 and the OVA.

If you're going to watch You're Under Arrest, I would start the OVA as it might be the strongest in the franchise and maybe the movie which is actually decent. They is three TV show and it's wise not to try watch back to back of it. I did when I was going through the entire franchise and man...it almost kill me. I have to watch other animated show in between so, I don't hate the series as it follow the same formula which get tiring quickly.

Gunsmith Cats I've got all the dark horse localized manga and it's so damn good in those omnibus books and Riding Bean is included in that too.

I stumbled upon recently a good price locally for the total Black Lagoon anime set (600min~ run time) and that one sucked me in so much I took down a disc a day on it. That one has a great story, varied crew, and just a lot of really well worked out situations that keep you entertained.

Own the physical omnibus book of Gunsmith Cats and love it. Need to get back watching Black Lagoon as it was great for season 1.

The omnibus for Gunsmith Cats is censored. There is a little additional stuff in the original volumes.

Just watched the premier of Darling in the FranXX, Trigger and A-1's new super robot anime. It's a little heavy on the fanservice lewdness already, but had an interesting creepy vibe to it and unique but kind of fun mechanical design. I wasn't blown away but 2D mecha action is rare these days so I'll take it.

I'm already cringing at that mecha design and assuming school is involved and space is not involved.

???
