I think y'alls is crazy. I don't enjoy the donkey kong country games at all, but felt tropical freeze is a master class of platforming. In the end, to each their own, but for me it is one of the best platformers ever.

I don't think it was as good as the old DKC titles, but of the returns releases I thought the Wii one was a mix of infuriating annoyance and crap in how it was just designed all around, and the 3DS one didn't help matters enough to change my mind a whole lot. The WiiU game played better and the stage design was improved, but I never gave more than a few worlds worth of effort as I had by then been so turned off by WiiU I just didn't give a damn and sold it a few months later once my boiling point hit.
When they ran a large update it bricked my system, which I've never had happen ever on anything before. When I mailed it in and got it back, they sent me a scratched up refurb while mine was spotless. I made sure it worked, formatted it, then sold it shortly after as I wasn't going to re-do that work again. WiiU sucks.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Wii U had a lot of great games but it was kinda clunky as a console. Now if Nintendo ports Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Xenoblade X and Wonderful 101 then there will be no real reason for someone to own one. Aside from 3D world and Smash but they might port that as well who knows.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Is the Wii disposable to everyone too? Does everyone forget the Wii U plays Wii games?
I wish I still had my GC backward compatible Wii though.

I agree with just about everything you posted. The only 2 things I disagree with are:Retrogameresource wrote:N64 is overrated, its controller is underrated, but still mediocre
Mario 64 is just good not incredible, much more important than it is actually great
Link to the Past is better than OoT
Castlevania 1 is easy... except the hallway before the grim reaper
Classic Castlevania is better than metroidvania
Super Mario World is better than SMB 3
Mega man series better than X series
Closed world is better than open world.
Obviously these are merely my opinion not even close to fact. I especially feel strongly about classic vs metroidvania style CV games
1) Mario 64 is only good, not incredible.
2) Castlevania 1 is easy, I half agree with this, for me Castlevania 1 is easy, Contra is easy, double dragon 3 is easy, but thats only because I have played these games so many times in my life that they are ingrained in my head, as Castlevania 1 is ingrained in yours, but watch someone play it for the first time and I think you will see how challenging it is for people who did not grow up on it.
I also am not sure that classic castlevania is better than metroidvania is an unpopular opinion. I do love the metroidvanias but I think there are tons of people like us who would love nothing more than a classic castlevania game. My dream game is a Super Castlevania 5, A game that has all the mechanics of 4 but with all new levels and modernized graphics, keep most of the soundtrack though, 4 has some of my all time favorite game songs.

Never used my Wii U to play Wii games. I used my Wii to play them with the exception of LA Machine Guns. My Wii is still perfect for playing my imports.Xeogred wrote:Is the Wii disposable to everyone too? Does everyone forget the Wii U plays Wii games?

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I've kept my Wii because it seems to behave better with the various USB loaders, and no need to boot into the virtual Wii mode. If I got a big SD card, I might consider moving some stuff over to the Wii U. It's a bit annoying using a USB stick, though, because it always constantly gripes about the stick needing formatting on the Wii U side.Xeogred wrote:Is the Wii disposable to everyone too? Also, there are a few emulators out there that let you enable 240p, which is great if you throw it on a CRT. I haven't actually tried it on a CRT, mind, but I have to imagine it looks pretty great.
Plus, I use it to rip my GC games, so it's good to keep around for that reason too.

Super Mario Odyssey - Time for the truth!

Super Mario Odyssey was just good. Not great and nowhere near a masterpiece. I'm happy I got my Switch, but Odyssey really lacked something. A kind of magic that Xenoblade 2 has been giving me and Breath of the Wild gave in spades. Both entirely subjective comparisons, but let's just say I really expected to get more out of Odyssey than I did in comparison to all the other big hits last year... and more importantly compared to past Mario games.
Odyssey beats out Sunshine for me, because there's less serious issues with mechanics/camera control and annoying scenarios, but other than that I don't think it really comes to the level of Mario 64, Galaxy 1-2, or even 3D World. Those games all felt massive and complete. Odyssey does not.
In Odyssey we get about a dozen or so disjointed worlds with no real consistent aesthetic, which is jarring. Several of them seem fairly lazy and uninteresting, like the first lake world... when there's a better Sunshine-ish lake world later on. How about the ice world that's literally a barren circle? The dinky caterpillar and food world felt like they could have been the same thing. The desert area was really boring. The entire main half of the game is you backtracking throughout these worlds to get more moons again and you still get some of those hilariously pointless moons, like climb this plainly visible tree. Good job, you know how to jump on a tree and push up. I hated being thrown out of levels after getting a star in previous games, but the moons weren't very rewarding to collect. I don't see any issue with the korok seeds in Breath of the Wild, because they are completely optional and you a rewarded a literal piece of golden poop for getting them all, it clearly wasn't Nintendo's intention for people to get obsessed with these. But moons in Odyssey are a more vital collectible, except they just don't feel special at all when they probably should.
Some worlds are like incomplete content, like the Cloud and Ruined Kingdom worlds. What was the point of these? You go back to them and can get like 5-10 more moons in both, except they easily could have placed these puzzles in another world. Your revisit to these worlds will probably take 10 minutes tops, then you're done with them forever. Seems like fluff to make that list of worlds look mysteriously bigger.
But when you revisit all the levels... you suddenly realize how tiny these worlds truly are. Whereas Odyssey gives us about a dozen levels, Mario 64 had what... 100? The scale of Oyddsey's levels doesn't really feel any bigger than Mario 64's levels. Something isn't right here. 3D World's post end game content was insane... 3 entire new worlds with tons of new levels and the difficulty skyrockets in an awesome way. 64 had tons of secrets to uncover and Galaxy 2 had a bunch of stuff to discover too. But Odyssey just expects you to casually replay its dozen or so levels again for a bunch of more moons. Then you get a boss rush and obstacle course gauntlet for the end game material, which just doens't interest me at all.
The music has some peaks, but doesn't even come close to Koji Kondo's awesomeness on the Galaxy and 3D World games.
Can you point out any specific Cappy abilities that were truly that interesting or innovative? I liked the long legs thing in the forest world or the caterpillars, the lava guys were fun too. But in previous games, Mario would often get a new ability on top of his versatile set of moves giving you tons of options. Here, you just get one base ability with most monsters and that's about it. They never really seem to capitalize on it much. And while I liked some of the bosses, they already seem very forgettable.
Mario Odyssey feels amazing, at least. This is quite possibly the best playing 3D Mario game out there when it comes to Mario's controls. New Donk City is cool for obvious reasons and the Bowser world is great per usual. But beyond that, I really don't know what to say about Odyssey in retrospect already. I guess it's a great entry for new fans which is maybe what they were going for, but really when you strip out Cappy barely changing much... this feels like far too safe of an effort. It always felt like I was wanting something a little more when I played, or I was just constantly thinking about 64, Galaxy 1 and 2, or 3D World instead while playing it. My favorite parts were the obstacle course areas with challenges, usually rooms with two moons... those areas were like pieces of classic Mario stages, both from Sunshine's Fludd-less areas or 3D World's levels in general, but then you get thrown back out into the rest of the game that just feels like a lot of lost potential.
Is it just me?
Still on my top 10 for last year but I'll probably knock it down a few ranks. I really want to get a straight up sequel on the Switch hopefully in a few years. The blueprints that are there should be amazing to work with, the potential of Cappy abilities and perfection of Mario's mechanics, I just want better levels to back that up and something more rewarding along the way instead of the moon spam and recycled boss fights.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
You aren't crazy with your mario perspective. I found the game to be fun... very fun. The controls are great and you just smile while playing. It didn't blow me away and I did not feel this absolute need to 100% it ( I will eventually, but over a long period).
It is a very very good game, but very rarely do I play a Mario game and have it change my perspective of how games are meant to be played.
