Best Way to Play Mario Classics Legit, Cheap, w/ Saves

Ok to keep it 100% legit here is what I would do:
1. Buy VC versions of the Mario games you want (SMB, 2, 3 and Super Mario World)
1a. If you like the All-Star treatment over the original 8 bit then get the All-Star disc.
2. Buy a SNES Classic controller they all, official and 3rd party, with the Wii.
I have a knockoff SNES controller and it works great on VC games but won't work with the emulators... so if you need a controller let me know.

Are the Virtual Console releases the only way to get the little icons on the Wii Dashboard? (nice for favorites)
While I am planning on picking some up before the store expires, I'm curious if the VC WADs act the exact same way...

Yes, AFAIK .wad files are the only ones to show up like that. There is however a complete list of all wiiware releases for download as .wad files last time i checked, and that included VC.
