Things in media that scared you as a kid.

Post by VG_Addict »

Tell us about things in media that you were afraid of when you were younger, no matter how silly it seems now. It can be anything, like shows, commercials, video games, etc.

I remember I used to be afraid of Olmec from Legends of the Hidden Temple.

I recall not being a fan of things that could ominously float through walls (green snake things in Doc Savage, Yip Yip aliens things in Sesame Street, etc).

I remember being scared of the monster from Ernest Scared Stupid. I had a nightmare that it was chasing me.

That dummy from the early 80's film Magic. The poster and especially the commercial gave me nightmares!

Yeah I had a big fear of dummies as a kid, but it was from a Twilight Zone episode, where it was autonomous. Still kinda creeps me out.

For some reason the song "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics really creeped me out as a kid. I don't really know why. I guess just the sound of the synth or something?

I eventually figured out a trick to get over that fear though:

The "creepy crawlers" commercial freaked me out as a kid. Don't know if it was the jingle or what but it legit freaked me out and my older brother always teased me for it. Haha

I can't believe I'm the first person to say Large Marge from Pee-wee's Big Adventure! She terrified me. I rented that movie because I loved Pee-wee's Playhouse and was not prepared for the insanity that it contained! But now I love it.

I was also afraid of the abominable snowman from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. He gave me nightmares.

Another thing that wasn't actually for children was this movie called The Navigator. At school, a teacher put on The Flight of the Navigator, but just referred to the movie as The Navigator, so I thought that was the title. We didn't watch the entire movie so I wanted to rent it from the video store and with my mom we were able to rent "The Navigator." As soon as I put it in the VCR, I recognized that this was NOT the right movie. It opens up with medieval folks digging through the earth, attempting to take an offering to the Holy Land to be safe from the plague. To signal the coming plague, there's a FLYING SKELETON BLOWING A HORN IN FRONT OF THE MOON, OUT OF FRIGGIN' NOWHERE. That freaked me RIGHT OUT. I did watch the whole movie though and it WARPED MY LITTLE BRAIN. Probably a major reason I watch the weird movies I do now.
When the DVD came out and I was able to rewatch it as an adult and actually follow the movie, it was a pretty cathartic experience.
