Would Kingdom Hearts count as a Final Fantasy Spin-off?
Based on the number of cameos alone, I certainly think it could count. I think the big strength of the new Together Retro format is that it allows for some degree of participant interpretation of the theme. In some ways it's just as interesting to see how people interpret the theme as it is to hear about the details of what they're playing.

Have you played Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII? If we do FF spin offs, that's one I'm strongly considering. It's a third person ARPG starring Vincent Valentine from FF VII. By most accounts the gameplay is serviceable though mediocre, but I've always been curious about it. Seems like a good excuse to finally dive in! In my case I'll need to find a workable screen to use with my PS2 though. I don't currently have a CRT screen, and something like the OSSC is slightly out of my budget for the time being.

I'm also strongly considering something from the Crystal Chronicles series as I've never played any of those, or maybe even (gasp) Mystic Quest on SNES.

Crystal Chronicles... Mystic Quest... Kingdom Hearts... Oh! Oh! CRISIS CORE! There's so much FF stuff to pick from but we need some votes to shift to FF to make this happen!

(again, I picked the 4 choices so all of them sound good to me. But I was leaning most towards the FF and Zelda Clones myself).

That is my next game added to my Backlog and would be an excellent pick for the Month.

Very much like you, I have basically heard that it is a poor man's Devil May Cry and that the story gets a bit overdone. However, I am a Final Fantasy fanboy and I could not say no to the game.

For opinions, I have heard some good ones and some bad ones. I think they were mostly positive, but it wasn't over the moon. An average game with some very interesting mechanics.

Oh and Mystic Quest is also a great choice. It's very simple with some good music. It gets repetitive very fast, so don't play it for like 10 hours at a time. But, it's not bad considering what it is.

alright well still close. There's plenty of FF enthusiasm in this thread, so it may still take the lead if we get a couple more votes

I have played Dirge of Cerberus for like 30 minutes, decided I didn't like it, and sold it on. Maybe you guys will enjoy it if you give it a chance, but it wasn't for me.

Also, I remember the controls being terrible.

If Kingdom Hearts is an option then I’ll probably actually join in this one after all. I wasn’t going to because i don’t really feel like I have the time to get far in a new RPG but I love Kingdom Hearts. My wife and I never did get around to finishing in Kingdom Hearts 2 (although I beat it myself years ago).

And would Ehrgeiz count? It’s got 3 Final Fantasy characters. I played it a lot when I was a kid but I wonder if it’s actually any good. I know there are also those Final Fantasy fighters on PSP but I don’t really have enough interest in them to pay for them.

Also, I played Crisis Core back when it released. I do recommend that one; it’s a solid game. The side missions are pretty repetitive but they kept my attention well enough for me to keep doing them. A note for completionists: there are missable missions. I finished the game at basically 99.9 percent complete because I’d done everything except one mission that I couldn’t go back to. It was so frustrating.

C'mon Wonderboy needs love! Everyone has played FF. Not everyone has played Wonder Boy and they should!

Aww man, I love me some Mystery Dungeon Chocobo! Well if anyone else cares about Chocobo, on DS there's 2007's Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales, and 2008's Cid to Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon: Toki Wasure no Meikyuu +. The former got an official localization, and the latter got an English fan translation (menus only). And on Wii there's 2008's Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon. On PS1 there's 1999's Chocobo's Dungeon 2 and Chocobo Racing. The original Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon released in 1997.

The original Dissidia Final Fantasy on PSP could count, as the Japanese release date was 2008. Also on PSP, there's 2007's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII... which I really enjoyed, but anyone else's mileage may vary. Another PSP entry is 2006's Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable, which got a full English fan translation.

On Wii there's 2008's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. Actually a few of the Crystal Chronicles games are over 10 years old now...
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Wow it's really going back and forth! I'm personally rooting for FF spinoffs since there's some genre variety and not a lot of platformers haha.

I think I've actually played more Wonderboy games than I have FF games haha. I didn't really like any of the ones I played, but I'm mega picky with platformers so that's kind of expected for me.

Yesss! This is why I most want FF spin-offs to win. Also Chocobo's Racing and the first Crystal Chronicles game look interesting too.

I did not know this was fan translated! Even if the FF topic is not chosen, I'll have to check this out.
