To be fair, however, I really haven’t given either genre a fair shake.

I’ve played a few tower defense games and that’s enough for me. As for rogue-like, I don’t know why but procedural generated levels really don’t appeal to me. I played a bit of Spelunky since I got it free on Xbox but i tend to avoid games with random levels otherwise.

Spelunky is one of my favorite games EVER. That doesn't add much to the conversation. Just saying.

The classics are good. Rampart is awesome. As are other old games with "defense" elements.

As is Rogue, Dungeon Hack, Fatal Labyrinth, Dragon Crystal, the older Mystery Dungeon games, Castle of the Winds, and so on.

As for the 874387785 million modern indie and phone games that belong to these genres.............. not so much.

It begs the question of what balance between entry better for casual players, versus keeping competitive play deep enough, is just right.
Fighters in the last 5 years have been developed to be more lenient with command-input accuracy and timing along with simplified special move inputs. This is to make the games more accessible to new players. Take SFV and KI 2013 for example. SFV removed charge characters entirely and 1-frame links from combos. KI has no special moves with half circles; directional movements are quarter-circle, down-up/back-forward, or dp (Z) motions. And only a few characters have a DP motion special move.

The Fighting game genre is pretty unique compared to other types of games. It requires a large investment from the player to learn the game's mechanics and practice that other PVP games only force at a much higher level. Brand new players are going to lose badly and see little reward against human competition until they devote time to the game.

Balance in a fighting game is a complicated issue. But fighters are usually balanced with mid to high level players in mind and/or to fix blatantly broken gameplay.

Unpopular gaming opinion?: As a business plan, Nintendo shouldn't bother making a traditional console again. Just keep making the Switch (in different sizes) with incremental upgrades every 2-3 years while maintaining compatibility with older titles. Keep making iPhone apps for casual gamers. Phase out 3DS.

I don't feel that way (FTL for life) but I won't argue that it hasn't become an overused buzzword in the indie scene.

I would call that 100% the right thing to do, and likely what they're exactly going to do too. Mario, Fire Emblem, and Animal Crossing are all learning examples how to handle the space and the progression into AC has shown some growth on how to handle it well and it's working.

The break down of the parts and boards in the Switch basically scream what you are wishing for. The entire thing has a set of parts that have room for physically bigger and more complex stuff that snaps into a socket/plug off the main board. It screams upgrades which fits given the Nvidia way with their Shield tech.

If this is unpopular to think that way, people need to just get over it because it is clearly not only saving their collective asses at Nintendo it's causing some insane growth that's now drawing stories of largest growth type stories and comparisons drawn to the way the Wii went down too a decade ago.

IMO, the Wii was a fluke. Nintendo consoles were on the decline after the SNES. Sure they did better than Sega, but they also help create their biggest competitor, Playstation. Luckily for Big N, they have a loyal fanbase with great 1st & 2nd party offerings. Their portables have always sold well though.

N64 is overrated, its controller is underrated, but still mediocre

Mario 64 is just good not incredible, much more important than it is actually great

Link to the Past is better than OoT

Castlevania 1 is easy... except the hallway before the grim reaper

Classic Castlevania is better than metroidvania

Super Mario World is better than SMB 3

Mega man series better than X series

Closed world is better than open world.

Obviously these are merely my opinion not even close to fact. I especially feel strongly about classic vs metroidvania style CV games
