Decided to warm up with something familiar so I made a quick run through Aladdin on SNES last night.

I've beaten it many many times through out the years. Still just as much of a classic as ever.

Yeah, the attacking mechanics in particular for Buster are just weird. Interestingly, you have frames of invincibility on the downswing, so you can use that to your advantage in spots.

I was pretty much terrible at video games when I was young, and most of the time I spent with that kid, I was roped into playing Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball, or watching The Sandlot--the former was okay; The latter usually made me regret being born. So, I don't think we ever put that much time into it, but as an adult, with much better video game skills, I can definitely cut my young-self some slack when it comes to Buster Busts Loose. It's a train wreck, and not just because the train level (second stage) is some next level horse manure. The controls suck, the move 'arsenal' is a sack of crap, the stage design is unreasonable, and the music is what I imagine prisoners in Singapore are forced to listen to while in solitary confinement. About the only thing it has going for it is some decent graphics.

Moving on--.

my copy of Ducktales Remastered finally arrived today. It's just as great as I remember it. As someone who played A LOT of Ducktales on the NES, I really appreciate the work that went into this remake. And as someone who loved the show as a kid, I really think that they voice work is fantastic here.

So far I've just beaten the Amazon.

I got halfway through Darkwing Duck last night and it rules, clearly has some thick Mega Man DNA in there. I'll see this one through to the end. It actually seems harder than most Mega Man games, but I think it's 100% new to me. And you can only take a few hits compared to Mega Man's bigger life bar. The enemy respawning is brutal in spots too, the sewer stage was quite challenging.

The Great Circus Mystery is down for the count. It's a fun game, more of the same as the first game. However, it is much easier overall. The first game gives you unlimited continues, but will force you to retry sections when you die. In this one, you actually respawn in-place, making bosses much easier to deal with. You still have unlimited continues, and it only sends you back to the beginning of the section you died at, like the first game. The only more "difficult" thing is that your coins are wiped out when you continue, as opposed to remaining persistent like the first game. That means that there's a good chance you won't be able to buy the suit upgrades, since they cost 300 coins.

The suits do change in this one, too. You get an explorer's outfit that lets you hook on to certain objects and climb walls. A vacuum cleaner lets you pull items toward you and suck some enemies in (which is useful against a certain boss in particular). And then the cowboy suit, which gives you a pogo-ing Mickey with a pop gun.

I should also mention that this game can be played two-player simultaneous. Pretty neat, honestly. I did not partake of that feature, though. I'll probably give the last of the series a shot, too; by all accounts the third game that we didn't get is the best of the series, and I've liked what I've seen to this point.

I had a warm up run for my games this month by having a play of 2 games from my childhood - The Lion King and Castle of Illusion for Mega Drive.

I was not on form this evening, so I just played them until I hit the game over screen, regardless of any continues I might have had. I crashed out on The Lion King hidesouly early on stage 6 (I used to regularly hit stage 8 when I was 10!) and similarly hit a game over on Castle of Illusion during the Clock Tower stage. I'm obviously a bit rusty, somehow!

Tomorrow I plan to jump in with some more - I might either replay some 8 bit titles, or finally jump in with the 3 I intend to try and beat for the first time this month - Little Nemo, Batman and Mickey's Wild Adventure (AKA Mickey Mania). All 3 are super hard though, so I need to get in some practice first I think

I've always wondered, is The Lion King as brutal as its reputation?

You ain't seen bad hit detection and wonk controls until you've played The Lion King. It's one I could best back in the day, the SNES version I believe. But yeah it is no walk in the park whatsoever if only because of awful programming and just really weird design at times. It is utterly absurd how long the pink monkey maze level is too, which is really early on. Then from there I recall there being numerous levels and points in the game that can easily completely break a run and drain your lives up.

No easy task, Simba.
