Spencer Nilsen's Sega CD music is incredible.
Sonic CD was one of those rare games I would pause to listen to the music while playing with action figures or something. And recorded the music to a tape. One of the greatest OST's of all time. It was a joy to play the JP/EU version years later though and it's cool that it's a simple option in the latest releases of the games. It's a win/win.
If you guys didn't know, the Sonic CD Boom release of the OST has the full tracks... there are movements in the songs not heard in game. So it's really cool to hear the extended full versions. Check that album out.

This for me as well though I'm not a fan of Sonic CD for the most part.Sarge wrote:Although I find it to be more on a song-by-song basis. A lot of times I like the US version better, but there are a few of the Japanese songs that I like more.

I really love both soundtracks.
The US version of Tidal Tempest is really gorgeous though.

Undertale is a good little game. It's overrated as well. I like the game but I don't think it's as great as it's touted to be. The humor is well done and fun. It's not greatly balanced as a game, however. The shmup battle system is different but more frustrating than fun. I still think anyone who is an RPG fan should play it but try to not fall into the hype.

I'm critical of the more "complicated" fighting game input systems. All those Zs, half circles, charging, and the level of timing memorization needed to consistently pull them off even when under pressure.
It begs the question of what balance between entry better for casual players, versus keeping competitive play deep enough, is just right.

I completely disagree with you for Spelunky, I think your comments about gradual upgrades, etc, definitely describe Rogue Legacy, but not Spelunky. It is very well balanced, has precise platforming and is all about honing your skill with the playstyle regardless of the environment you're thrown into. I would put Spelunky in one of my favorite all time games.

Honestly Rogue Legacy's system is just a different way of leveling up. It's basically Iga-era Castlevania only you have to die to level, that's all. I don't feel like it was trying to be an old trial and error platformer in the first place.PresidentLeever wrote:I have a pretty strong dislike for most of the rogue-lite games that were popular a couple of years back; Spelunky and Rogue Legacy for example. I feel like they throw good balancing out the window and try to hide it with gradual upgrades, similar to getting tons of extra lives or hp pickups in a badly designed retro platformer. I also found that I much prefer being able to practice the same segment (or at least a more similar one) that I just died on, rather than hoping I get an easier time the next session
And there's a very limited number of rooms to it so in regards to practicing the same segment it eventually comes to that anyway, you start to immediately recognize what room you're in after a while.
I thought it was a decent system personally, the game is as hard or as easy as you want to make it.
Now if you want to argue the level design isn't great, I agree it's pretty bland in the service of having the procedural castle but it didn't bother me much since it's more action RPG than platformer.

Generally, I read the words "rogue-like" and scurry in the other direction. Not always, but mostly. "Tower defense" does the same thing.

To be fair, however, I really haven’t given either genre a fair shake.

+2 Tower defense is why Dragon Quest Heroes was such a letdown. That entire game is Tower defense....ok not the whole game. It has a couple escort missions as well....ughprfsnl_gmr wrote:+1Sarge wrote:Generally, I read the words "rogue-like" and scurry in the other direction. Not always, but mostly.
