If you could only play three genres, what would they be?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

If you could only play three genres, what would they be?

Post by Flak Beard »

Variety is good, but what if you had to choose only three genres to stick with? What would they be and why?

RPGs - Long, fun and engrossing. This has always been my go-to genre, and played the biggest part in keeping me into gaming. I've definitely branched out over the years, but RPGs will probably always be my top genre. I find them relaxing, and love character growth through stats, skills and equipment. Not to mention, RPGs (especially Japanese developed ones) have always had great art appeal to me.

SHMUPs - Instant gratification! Nothing beats firing one up and being put into the action right away. I'm not terribly good at SHMUPs, but I love them all the same. They are also good for when you're short on play time, as many of the arcade bred shooters are in the twenty to thirty minute range.

Platformers
- Who can't pick the one genre that gave us Mario and Sonic? They can be challenging, but forgiving at the same time and I always get a sense of accomplishment from them. Too many games just litter the place with enemies to fight, but the plat-forming is what it's all about for me.

I feel like i'm copying you :(

RPGs-The first games I fell in love with, and they compose probably 70-80% percent of my collection. Will also most likely be my favorites forever.
However, the best RPGs were made in years past, I think the ps1 was the greatest system for them (though this might be partly nostalgia)

Shmups-Whereas RPGs require little to no skill to finish, shmups are all skill (maybe a little luck too :) ) I can play them for a minute or an hour, and I can play one over and over again and not get bored.

First Person Shooters-However, to be more specific, only 2 of them - Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament 2004. I'm not a big fan of all the recycled titles coming out nowadays. I spent an ungodly amount of hours playing Quake III in high school, and it never got old, best LAn game bar none :)

(also maybe platformers)

Fighters, Platformers and RPGs. I would put shmups in, but I'm relatively new to the genre and fighters are the reason I got into videogames in the first place. Capcom and SNK nurtured and educated me.

Action RPG - If done well they give you a great world to explore, vast dungeons and towns, hundreds of enemies, and loads of fun. I never grow tired of the genre, which probably explains why I own way to many of them.

Point and Click Adventures - Interactive movies that really grab me and no matter how many times I finish them I still enjoy playing them. Indy Fate of Atlantis and the Dig are two of the most amazing experiences in gaming period.

PC FPS - Namely Team Fortress Classic and UT99/2k4. TFC was my bread and butter of gaming for almost five years. If there was downtime at home, it was TFC time. UT shook the crown more than once, captivating me with Onslaught and Bombing Run, but in the end TFC is still my favorite FPS of all time. I dont even have to play new ones, just let me keep AvP Gold, Half Life 1&2 and mods, the UTs, Quake 2&3 and mods, Serious Sam 1&1.5, Delta Force 2&BHD, and BF1942 and mods, and I dont think I will ever need another.

fighters-SF,KOF,& MK games come to mind, the arcades wouldn't be that fun without them and one of the main reasons I gotten into video games.Since I got my DC 2 years ago Ive been playing fighters more than ever.8)

first person shooter-you can shoot the hell out of everyone that tries to kill you,how can you not like that?

platform- you need games like Sonic & Mario, this industry wouldn't be the same without them.I just bought Super Mario Bro 3 on NES.Good times.

Fighters- I love 2d fighting games. The Street Fighter Series, Vs Series, KoF series, Guilty Gear Series..all are great in their own way. Nothing beats a game of Marvel vs Capcom 2, Tatsunoko vs Capcom or even Capcom vs SNK 2 with a group of friends.

Sports-(preferably soccer/futbol)- Winning Eleven 10-Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 is my favorite game of all time, hands down. I couldn't live without it. All the other sports games I really don't need, just that!

That's it, don't really care for any other genres of games..A Zelda game wouldn't be bad though..

For me it would be:

RPGs: Hours of gameplay and fun storylines. Most titles in here are instant-buys for me.

RTS: Once again, hours of gameplay. They also have some really good editors that allow for lots of gameplay types.

FPS: Deus Ex. Nuff said. All of you guys who mention stuff like UT as the reason for FPS need to play this game.

I would put the same except probably switch shmups for adventure games. My question is would I have to split action adventure games and point and click adventure games into two separate genres or is it fair to say they all fall under the adventure umbrella. Haha, I don't know I might be splitting hairs here but that would make for a pretty meaty and awesome selection of games.
