Sonic Mania, closely followed by Cuphead.

Mutant League Football was a blast so I'd put that 3rd.

My GOTY list always draws from everything I've played this year rather than everything that came out this year.

That said:

Honorable Mentions:
Games that are basically games I played before: Paper Mario, Bare Knuckle 3, Pokemon Ultra Moon, Shinobi 3, Cave Story+, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - several of these would have made the top 10 but I wanted to make space for newer experiences. Paper Mario woulda been top 5 material, for the record, I adore that game.

Games 20-11: In no particular order, these are the games that missed the top 10:
Fire Emblem Echoes (3DS), Shantae & The Pirates Curse (3DS eShop), The Mystical Ninja starring Goemon (N64), Parasol Stars (PC Engine), Bionic Commando (NES), Astro Boy: Omega Factor (GBA), Gorogoa (Switch eShop), Star Parodier (PC Engine), Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite! (GBC), Noobow (Game Boy)

And without further ado, the top 10:

10. Akumajou Densetsu: Boku Dracula-Kun - Game Boy
Better known as Kid Dracula over here in the west, this was a stupidly fun little game. It's pretty short and pretty easy, but it's beautifully polished and I'd rate it as one of the most fun games on Game Boy, which is very high praise indeed if you know me well.

9. OutRun 2 - XBox
OutRun 2 was pure Sega arcade fun, and I didn't want to stop playing it despite beating it during a week when I intended to beat tons of games. Needless to say I'll be going back to this one frequently.

8. Overcooked Special Edition - Switch eShop
The first of many Switch games on this list, this is one I played in co-op with my girlfriend. We played through several games as a team this year, but this is the one we had the most fun with for sure. Chaotic but simple to pick up and play, this is a must own if you have a buddy to play along with.

7. Sonic Mania - Switch eShop
Probably the best 2D Sonic game ever made, and thus probably the best Sonic game period. It's a hard fought race between this and Sonic 2, but the sheer fact that I'm making the comparison should illustrate how good this one is. If only Sega will learn from this.

6. Puyo Puyo Tetris - Switch
I love me some Puyo Puyo, and I'm a bit meh on Tetris, but this game made me appreciate both. The core games were as great as they always are, but the swap mode was even better and the mind-bending fusion was an incredibly unique experience. A fantastic puzzle game.

5. The Legend of the Mystical Ninja - SNES
This was my choice for Together Retro this year, and it didn't disappoint. Barmy, challenging and tightly designed, I loved this one. This is another game I played through in co-op, this time with a buddy of mine, and we had a great time. We are also the whack-a-mole champs now.

4. Blast Corps - N64
I love me some N64 games, especially by Rare, and this is one that I hadn't played before. It's generic looking graphics and title mean it's mostly forgotten, but in reality it's one of the most inventive, quirky and outright fun games on the system. I beat 6 N64 games this year, and this was definitely my favourite.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Switch
So I'm probably upsetting a few people on the forum with my list already due to the prevalence of modern games over retro this year (sorry guys, I really enjoyed a lot of what I played on Switch this year...) and I'm likely to ruffle a few feathers by only placing this 3rd too. I loved BOTW and spent a good 130 hours exploring every area thoroughly and searching out and beating all 120 shrines. It's a great game, but I still prefer the classic Zelda formula, and my favourites will likely continue to be the Ocarina of Time style 3D Zeldas. That doesn't change the fact that this is a masterpiece though, and I loved it too.

2. Overwatch - PS4
If you'd told me ast year that my contender for GOTY this year would not only be an FPS, but an online-only multiplayer focused FPS with lootboxes, I'd have called you crazy, but dammit, I really loved me some Overwatch. The first online game I've ever got into in any significant way, I'm thoroughly invested in the game every time I play. I main support btw, if anyone was wondering - Symmetra, Ana, Moira are my current mains, with Tracer and Orisa being by general flex picks!

1. Super Mario Odyssey - Switch
I'm a much bigger Zelda fan than Mario fan, but whereas I was torn on my feelings between old Zelda and new Zelda, I never had any doubts about Mario Odyssey - it's fantastic. From the moment I turned on the game until way after the credits rolled, a big dopey smile appeared on my face and never once went away. Inventive and yet channeling the style of classic 3D Mario, everything about this game played and controlled so perfectly. More of this please! My favourite Mario game ever I reckon, and my choice for GOTY 2017.

So, 2017 was another banner year gaming wise for me!

Surprisingly, I beat 2016's record progress of +22 by 5 whole games and ended with a +27. Considering how awful 2016 was for me personally, I was surprised at how well I did gaming wise. And 2017 was much of the same. 2017 was a roller coaster of a year personally, but gaming seemed to be my one constant throughout the year.

2017 was also the year of changes for me. I left a job, became unemployed and eventually found another job by the end of the year. That 4 month unemployment let me beat several more games, but it also was the catalyst in finally deciding to change my gaming style. During that time period, I was playing 7 games at one time and it became too much. In the new year, I will be doing a whole new gaming style where I will only focus on two games. Hopefully, I will do even more progress and will make things so much more simpler.

2017 was also the year of highs and lows gaming wise. I played some utterly fantastic games, but I also played some utterly terrible games. Thankfully, I played enough good games to justify a Top 10, so here they are. First, the Top 10 Games That I Was Most Excited To Buy.

10. Dragon Valor (PS1)
9. The Granstream Saga (PS1)
8. Darkwing Duck (NES)
7. Crystalis (NES)
6. Batman: The Video Game (NES)
5. R.B.I. Baseball (NES)
4. Destruction Derby 64 (N64)
3. Mega Man: The Wily Wars (GEN)
2. The Elderscrolls III: Morrowind (XBOX)
1. Mega Man X (SNES)

Now, here are the Top 10 Best Games I Played This Year!

10. Syberia (XBOX)
9. Beyond Good & Evil (XBOX)
8. Soul Calibur II (GCN)
7. Sudeki (XBOX)
6. Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht (PS2)
5. Animal Crossing (GCN)
4. Pikmin (GCN)
3. Mega Man X (SNES)
2. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GCN)
1. Skies of Arcadia (DC)

The Top 4 games in my Most Wanted List were games that I wanted for a long time and I was glad to finally found them. The first game was a Birthday Present that I was not expecting one bit and very grateful for. For Best Game, it was between the top three games. I was close to picking Wind Waker, but I had more overall enjoyment with Skies of Arcadia.

So, here is to 2018! I'm hoping to make some more progress as I have put out some ambitious goals this year. I'm hoping to play more games and beat as many as always! It's getting close, but I am getting near to actually beating my Backlog!

Never agreed with one of your posts more than I do right now. That was that odd era of western games really trying to look anime but ended up looking like some deformed mess. Oh, and the game isn't very good on top of that.

2017 wasn't a particularly great year for me so I didn't beat as many games as I would have liked, but there were a number of games that I really enjoyed playing.

This year was pretty easy for me to rank my favourites, but I think my order may seem a little odd to some people I think ha. I order my lists based off how much I enjoyed the game, and not how well-made the game is. Also I'm having two lists, one for games released in 2017 and one for everything else, since I have a hard time ranking super new games either everything else haha.

For reference, here are the games I beat that were released in 2017 (in alphabetical order):
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch)
Nier Automata (PS4)
Persona 5 (PS4)
Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception (Vita)
Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth (Vita)
Yakuza 0 (PS4)
Yakuza: Kiwami (PS4)
And all the other games I beat:
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (Vita)
Ar Tonelico 2 (PS2)
Astebreed (PS4)
Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland (PS3)
Aviary Attorney (Steam)
Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker (WiiU)
Crawl (PS4)
Cooking Mama: Cook Off (Wii)
DOOM (GOG)
Emily is Away (Steam)
Gardens Inc: From Rakes to Riches (Steam)
Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star (Steam)
Harmonia (Steam)
Heart’s Medicine: Season One (BigFish Games)
Kirby’s Anniversary Collection: Kirby’s Dream Land (Wii)
Kirby Super Star (SNES)
Littlewitch Romanesque (Steam)
Mystic Inn (BigFish Games)
Persona 3 Portable (PSP)
Sweet Fuse: At Your Side (PSP)
Utawarerumono (PC)
My Favourite Games from 2017
5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Driving karts around was just a blast!
4. Yakuza 0 - Great introduction to the Yakuza series with an interesting cast of characters and great battle system.
3. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - My new favourite Zelda! A lot of fun to just ride around and take in the view.
2. Persona 5 - Battles never dragged and the non-randomized dungeons were great. Plus I loved the style and soundtrack!
1. Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth - I was hooked on the story the whole way through and I greatly enjoyed all of the battles. Never had a bad moment for me :)

My Favourite Games Not from 2017 (I coudln't think of good descriptions gah)
5. Ar Tonelico 2
4. Harmonia
3. Utawarerumono
2. Atelier Meruru
1. Littlewitch Romanesque

A lot of RPGs, VNs, and RPGs with a lot of VN segments this year, but I can say that I had a pretty good time with all of these :)

I have it, but I haven't ever played it. Maybe I should to see if I enjoy it or hate it.
