Eye roll all you like the Switch is a handheld dockable console. I just put that there because he was so adamant about excluding it from a handheld discussion. I still feel SML2 deserves it.

because this is purely for handhelds, not Hybrids. I love MO and think it's the best Mario since SMW. I just wanted more diversity than a bunch of MO answers.

You didn't say handheld Mario game; you said portable Mario game. Ergo, the correct answer is Super Mario Odyssey.

Here is a hot take... Super Mario 64 DS. Now hear me out. The game takes the glory of super Mario 64 and improves on it in all aspects. Better visuals, more stars, being able to play as not only mario, but luigi, Yoshi and Wario, each with their own special abilities that break the game in fun and crazy ways.

The game has a single cartridge multiplayer mode that is a blast to play where you steal stars from other players in an all out courtyard brawl. The giant minigame collection has some of the funniest time-wasters in a long time. Even the touchscreen movement controls are great. Yes... they may take some getting used do, but they are surprisingly great when you get the hang of it.
