What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
The original trilogy has continuity issues with itself. And the prequels have continuity issues with the original trilogy. In fact, I would say broadly that Star Wars has continuity issues.

It had its issues, certainly, but it was a lot of fun and broke from the traditions established by the other films. Also, I thought the cast and characters were pretty great.fastbilly1 wrote:I had massive issues with continuity in Rogue One to the Original Trilogy. And you know, the plotholes. It also hit the uncanny valley more than once.
I am one of those weirdos who thinks Revenge of the Sith is better than Return of the Jedi, however; so, it’s probably best not to listen to me...

I wanted to love Rogue One. Halfway through it my wife leaned over and asked if we could leave. We did not leave, and I have watched it twice since then. Issues with the story aside, I cannot get over the uncanny valley scenes.
That said, me not liking it has no bearing on you liking it. Except Popo...

A friend of mine is absolutely adamant that there is no uncanny valley with that bit of Rogue One, but I can just never see how she doesn't see it (she's also a self admitted huge SW fanboy and will even un-ironically defend the prequels to the death).fastbilly1 wrote:I wanted to love Rogue One. Had Tarkin just stared out the window, it would have been fine.

Absolutely. Had they given him less camera time, less time so deliberately staring at his face, it wouldn't have been a problem, but they felt SO eager to show off their pretty face that they absolutely chipped the shot directly into the uncanny valley.fastbilly1 wrote:Had Tarkin just stared out the window, it would have been fine.
I saw RO for the first time with that friend I previously mentioned, but she talks NON STOP in any situation in any movie (seen it before or not, at home vs. in a theater, any situation), so I wouldn't say I've really seen TFA or RO, to be honest. I've been meaning to watch them again sometime soon.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
My opinions on Disney Wars so far.
The Force Awakens: Safe and rehashed but decent as a new starting point for the rebooted franchise (and don't tell me it's not a reboot they nuked the entire EU for it). It left me with something to look forward to at least.
Rogue One: Competent but forgettable and entirely unecessary. I don't even remember the main characters' names.
The Last Jedi: What the hell did I just watch?

Saw Taeter City last night. Imagine a watered-down Troma film with crappy CGI gore as it muddles its way through an attempt at emulating '80s VHS trash with a hint of ultraviolent '80s cyberpunk anime. Not bad, though, all things considered.

Do you mean that in a good way or a bad way? I am heading to my second viewing tomorrowGunstar Green wrote: The Last Jedi: What the hell did I just watch?
Aside from seeing The Last Jedi like most other red-blooded American nerds, I have been watching some wonderfully strange films.
Endless Poetry
Alejandro Jodorowsky's latest is the second in his autobiographical series of (potentially?) five films, and this one is just as beautiful and bizarre as you might expect given his oeuvre. If you are new to the director, I wouldn't necessarily start with this one...it may be better to delve into a couple of his classics (The Holy Mountain or El Topo come to mind) or to at least watch the previous film in the new series (Dance of Reality) prior to coming to this one. Still, even knowing what to expect from the director, this film will give you plenty of WTF moments.
Jodorowsky's Dune
I would put this one right up there with Gilliam's Lost in La Mancha as one of the best films about failing to make a film. Jodorowsky's Dune sounds like it would have been a terrific cinematic accomplishment that was ahead of its time...its influence in later projects as presented in the last part of the film is really stunning.
Samsara
Ron Fricke's Baraka is still one of the most visually stunning films ever made, and this is a very worthy follow up that revisits some of the same philosophical and aesthetic themes in entirely new ways and in new locales. The photography here is breathtaking - some of what Fricke accomplishes with light and shadow, for example, is beyond anything I've seen in more standard features (or at least without CGI). A real treat of cinematography.
Zombeavers
You can probably correctly guess about 90% of this movie's plot and what to expect by its title, but that doesn't stop it from being a fun campy horror film.
The Void
Another surrealist-type of film, though this one is much more clearly in the Lovecraftian Horror genre. I thought the final act left more than a little to be desired, but it is a great looking film and delivers plenty of the kind of audience uneasiness that can be tough to do without seeming too heavy handed (or farcical).
I know there have been some others I've caught up with lately...will update this again soon...
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
You know, with distance from The Force Awakens, I was pretty indifferent to it. I liked it when I left the theater, but with more thought, it was just too close to the original's plot. It was safe, and I get why they did it. Still better than the prequel movies, though.
I really don't get all the dislike for TLJ, though. I've seen some long takedown articles in some places I frequent, and it feels like some folks are just being contrarian just to be contrarian. Like several of the "plot holes" or "implausibilities" or whatever. First, there's almost no sense of imagination there. They don't have to show everything on screen!
I have issues with one of the major plot points involving Poe, but then with some thought, some of how that all went down made sense. I don't want to get into spoiler territory, but I thought the portrayal of Luke was fine. I hated Kylo Ren in TFA, but now? I thought his character was very convincing, and that conflict both within himself and with Rey is legit.
Now, I must admit that I'm not a massive fan of Star Wars. They're enjoyable movies, sure, but I much prefer Star Trek overall. But this was a fun movie.
My biggest piece of advice to folks that enjoy Star Wars, though: These are basically movies about space wizards with laser swords. Turn off your brain for a bit, suspend your disbelief, and just enjoy it.
