I was a middle school teacher for 15 years before I became a principal. Every year I would bring my laptop in and have retro game parties with my classes, we would play many of the classics(nes/snes era) as well as a few retro inspired indies. Every year, every class, the reactions were exactly the same. First, they would comment on how ugly the graphics looked and then within 15 minutes they were all fighting over the controllers and trash talking one another.
Retro games are timeless, and are likely to be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age, if they are exposed to them.
How do young(er) people feel about 8 and 16 bit games?

When I have kids I'm going to brainwash them into liking retro games.
