Everything in this post is wrong.pook99 wrote:Could not agree more, I will take it a step further and say that Dreamcast is one of, if not the, worst mainstream console of all time(note: mainstream, obv better than random garbage like Jaguar and CD-i) it had a library of mostly shallow and terrible games. It died the death that it deserved and it legit annoys me to hear people in this day and age defend it as some kind of hidden secret that unjustly never caught on.Xeogred wrote:
Dreamcast, meh. I really don't think I'll ever bother to dust off this jet engine or put much time into it. Really bad controller. Sad times for SEGA, but the PS2, GC, and Xbox are better.
The mediocrity of the dreamcast is further exemplified when you compare it to the other systems of its day, especially ps2 which many still consider the greatest system of all time.

I agree that if you took the quality of every Mega Man release ever, averaged it all out, you'd end up with like a 5/10 overall. However, the occasional highs are really high in this series. Mega Man 2, Mega Man X, and Mega Man Legends alone are at least 9/10s. I really love the Mega Man Zero and ZX games, personally.

I still need to play the Zero series, but just Mega Man 2, 3, and X - X4 are enough for the series to be stand out, even if it contains a lot of mediocre stuff.

Does the Neo Geo count as mainstream? I'd consider that worse just because there was virtually no depth to the library. Lots of arcade games but little else. And sure, I love arcade games like that, but at some point I need to play more than fighters and shooters.
In some ways, I think the Saturn was worse, too. And without a few all-time classics from Nintendo, I think the Dreamcast would outclass the N64 as well. Heck, I think it might still outclass it; I'm not sure the few all-timers there is enough.
I mean, yeah, it's on a lower tier than the massively successful consoles, but that's a given. Considering the amount of time it was actually viable, we got a darn nice set of games to play on it.

Saturn and DC far outclass N64. Saturn is so loaded with RPGs, arcade games, and shmups. Guess which 32-bit era console doesn't have Ys. PS1. Saturn wins. I don't hate N64. I rather like it a lot. Saturn is just better with a better overall library for the sheer amount of great arcade games, shmups, RPGs and SEGA first party stuff. Saturn still had one of the best controllers ever made with the standard 6 button. DC controller is great. It's the Dualshock series that sucks ass (1-3) unless you have tiny hands. DS4 fixed every issue I had with PS controllers. As for worst mainstream consoles? If we dismiss well-known failures like Jaguar,3Do and such. N64. When you leave the Nintendo first party and Rare offerings you are not left with much in an already small library. Granted those games were great but I need more than that. Dreamcast despite a short life, it's library is like the Album Appetite for Destruction. Just awesome hit after hit of great stuff and it's a system still getting great indie games on disc. Play Asia sells stuff like Breakers on it. Dreamcast is getting more weekly releases than Wii U.

Hmm, that's a good subject. Defend your picks for worst mainstream (whatever you consider mainstream) console of all time. I'll have to ruminate on that one.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
like what? I'm asking out of genuine curiousity because I just can't seem to find any games that I enjoy, and I have a rather large dreamcast collection(even though I hate the system it died when I was managing funcoland so got tons of stuff for dirt cheap)Segata wrote: Dreamcast despite a short life, it's library is like the Album Appetite for Destruction. Every year I make it a point to play through at least one game on every console. Every year I struggle to find a dreamcast game worth playing through. I will give the system props for having some great 2d fighters and the best version of many of these games, but outside of that niche I have not found a game on the system that I really enjoy. So what games should I be playing? I am into most genres outside of sports and racing so give me some ideas for next year when I decide to play a dreamcast game.
I do agree with everything you said about the saturn.

That is a good question. I'm going to give my least favorite mainstream console (this will be a REALLY unpopular opinion...) and then what I think is the worst.chuckster wrote:Hmm, that's a good subject. Least favorite - PlayStation 2
Despite the fact that I own a good number of PS2 games, have absolutely loved a lot of PS2 games, and keep my PS2 plugged in via component cables at all times, I don't care for the PS2 at all. I don't know why, but I've always had a distinct dislike for the system. Maybe it's the absolutely rubbish video output quality (although component cables do help that issue SIGNIFICANTLY), maybe it's I'm not fond of the analogue sticks, or maybe it's as simple and petty as internalized anger that the PS2's blow out success ensured (at least in part) that my beloved Gamecube and Dreamcast would never realize their full potential. I don't know. But the PS2 is, excluding minor players like the CD-i and Game.com, without a doubt my least favorite "main" console.
Worst - Atari 7800
This will probably be unpopular with some of our bigger retro players like Bone, but even though I paid out the ass last month to have my 7800 repaired and composite modded, I think it's actually kind of a rubbish console. I'll absolutely give it props for having the first true backwards compatibility with the 2600 support (at least for North America), but I don't care for the feel of the joystick, and the games (at least from the ones I've played; I'm by no means an expert on the 7800) seem significantly inferior to NES and Master System counterparts. I still intend to collect for 7800, and I sincerely hope that I find some great games that change my opinion, but as it stands now, yeah. I don't have a good opinion of the Atari 7800.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I've said it before, and I guess I'll say it again; the Dreamcast is great depending on which gaming genres you enjoy. If you enjoy arcade-y action titles, the Dreamcast is excellent, as its library mostly skews that way. The Dreamcast certainly doesn't have the same scope of genre fulfillment that the GameCube, Xbox, and PS2 accomplished. Then again, those platforms also survived longer, thus accumulated a larger library.
