I do agree about the AAA games from Obsidian. They have the writing chops to pull off whatever they like. Tyranny and PoE were both fantastic, but you can tell they were limited with what they could really do. I'd like to know what sort of game they would make with a AAA budget though. Would they make a AAA PoE, or revive the third-person semi-turn based RPG, or do something completely different?

As for Jade Empire, I had my wish of any game ever to receive a quality sequel, that'd be my pick. In my eyes its only crime was not having the Star Wars license to sell it.

The Wii U reminds me of the Dreamcast in certain ways. It had a few really great games that all had a unique 'feel' to them in the middle of an industry going another way. Both systems have all-time greats on them (as most systems do), so they are worth owning. The overall libraries though are just not going to stack up to the other consoles of their respective generations, there's just not enough there.

As a franchise it's pretty messy and all over the place. I think if you laid the entire franchise out there's way more mediocre than good overall.

The real meat of the franchise, the "traditional" 2D platformer entries, are always going to be a case of you either love them and would be happy playing an infinite amount of sequels forever or you think it's OK and don't see the point of playing more than one of them. I think the average gamer could probably play Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X and get the gist of what it's all about and not necessarily ever need to touch another Mega Man game unless they want to.

For me they could probably keep making 8-bit Mega Man games in the vein of 9 and 10 forever and I'd keep playing them forever. It's one of my video game comfort foods.

Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa. Get out of here with that kind of talk!

Actually, it's kinda true, but it depends on how much you include from the franchise. I'd argue every single one of the NES games is a classic, and that MM9 is right up there with the best, and MM10 is at least worthy of a lower-tier NES title, so it's still good.

But beyond that? Yeah, it gets real dicey. MMX 1 & 4 are absolute classics, I've never really taken to X2/X3. X5 is pretty good. X6 is decent with some maddening flaws. X7 is pretty bad. X8 comes back up to "decent". Then you get all the spinoff stuff. The Battle Network games were fun, but Capcom ran them into the ground on a lot of entries. The Star Force games are spiritual descendants, so I also include them in that mix of "eh". Network Transmission just didn't play that well for me. Command Mission is actually pretty good, but I still haven't beaten it. I love the Legends games.

Oh, and that's not even counting the portable games! I'd say that on GB, the first is decent, the second is kinda goofy, third is good, and the fourth and fifth are fantastic.

There's no question I'm missing some, but yeah, the series is all over the place. There are very few terrible games in the series, but a lot of them aren't instant classics.

Any Mega Man game after Legends 2 is where the series is a mess. Could have been worse. We almost got a gritty westernized FPS Mega Man X. It was Bomberman Act Zero type shit.

"Maverick Hunter" was kind of an interesting concept with some neat mechanical designs from comics artist Adi Granov (most famous for designing the Iron Man armor that the cinematic versions are based around). It's not like Mega Man hasn't had a bunch of different re-inventions and spin-offs in the past.

For better or worse I would have liked to see the finished product. It didn't exactly scream "Mega Man" but it had potential to be its own cyberpunk FPS thing.

I'm not surprised Capcom ultimately decided to not take that direction though and considering they seemed pretty deep in development before they canned it things mustn't have been coming together well.

The planned plot would have had X growing in power and intelligence over the course of a trilogy of games until Zero would have to defeat him, which is a plot idea that Inafune wanted to explore in Mega Man Zero but Capcom wouldn't let him make X a bad guy so the villain of that first game became Copy X instead.

I pretty much agree. Outside the classic NES games there just isn't much worthwhile. The X games are eh, and the RPGs are downright awful.

And some of the NES ones aren't great by any stretch either. Terrible protagonist too. Not really jazzed about playing as a robo-toddler in undies.

Mega Man 2 owns though.

Yeah, the same talent behind Metroid Prime but that was the era of Capcom trying to westernize and make gritty every franchise they had. Bionic Commando(tho we got Re-armed at least next to the trash that was BC09), Almost Strider with Grins version(was a very generic ninja and was going to be very gritty), DmC, Resident Evil and more. So I'm just glad it never happened. If Mav came out good or bad would have sold badly and seen in the same light as DmC if not worse..heck might have been good unlike DmC but still just falls with that gritty western shit people were sick of from Capcom.

The only answer I have to this blasphemous and toxic Mega Man hate, is this.

Never seen Dragon Ball but that was annoying. Love the Blue Bomber. My PSN avatar has been Mega Man Powered Up since I started my account. Love the core games, X series, and Legends. After those series, Capcom drove the series into the ground even with some good games sprinkled in there. Just oversaturated. Inti Creates is pretty much filling the void now IMO. I feel if Capcom is going to bring the series back they should co-develop with Nintendo.

Dreamcast, meh. I really don't think I'll ever bother to dust off this jet engine or put much time into it. Really bad controller. Sad times for SEGA, but the PS2, GC, and Xbox are better.
Could not agree more, I will take it a step further and say that Dreamcast is one of, if not the, worst mainstream console of all time(note: mainstream, obv better than random garbage like Jaguar and CD-i) it had a library of mostly shallow and terrible games. It died the death that it deserved and it legit annoys me to hear people in this day and age defend it as some kind of hidden secret that unjustly never caught on.

The mediocrity of the dreamcast is further exemplified when you compare it to the other systems of its day, especially ps2 which many still consider the greatest system of all time.
