Yep. I dare someone to tell me what's different between:
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Shadow of War
- Assassin's Creed Origins

Hey... maybe even toss Witcher 3 in the mix!

I played and loved Assassin's Creed 2, along with Brotherhood. I enjoyed the early 3D GTA's and the Saints Row / Crackdown era of city sandboxes back on the 360. But now I'm pretty much done and exhausted this genre by this point. Checklist simulators don't do it for me anymore. Along with severe sequelitis, I always considered trying to get back to Assassin's Creed, but with literally like 10 games I'm behind on, I think I'll just simply not bother and play other things.

Got to justify this PS4 somehow.

You already did with Bloodborne.

I just think the story and setting look neat. I don't play a lot of open world games so I'm probably not as burnt out. I think the last one I played was Mad Max which I enjoyed because it was Mad Max despite being repetitive.

Yeah that's why I banked on Horizon, I was hoping the sci-fi elements and unique new IP-ness would be enough to reel me in, but yeah it ultimately couldn't save me from the gameplay.

I really enjoyed Horizon, but it being another open-world game is a fair complaint. I remember one of the reviewers over on USGamer getting reamed because she had the audacity to score it at 2.5/5.0, when everyone was singing its praises. And sure, I enjoyed it, but if you're burned out on open-world, it's not going to change your mind. It still succumbs to its share of checklist gaming.

That being said, it's a fantastically executed version of modern open-world games. When it started wearing thin, I did what I always do: ignore all the extra junk and push to the end. It's much more fun overall when I don't give in to OCD.

Related to the Nintendo discussion in the last few pages:

Despite trying over and over again, I have never been able to get into 3D Mario games. I don't know why - it's just a 2D franchise to me. Maybe it's a 2D genre to me, actually, because I can't think of a 3D platformer that I've ever really liked.

I doubt I'll even buy Mario Odyssey.

I did buy Mario Odyssey. It is, in fact, an amazing game.

I'm not a fan of 3D platformers, Mario or otherwise, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to play Odyssey.

I used to love Platformers but grew so tired of them. I really just didn't care for Mario Galaxy. MO is just a joy to play. I don't have to just play a platformer. I'm truly free to explore each Kingdom as much as I want even when the main objective is complete I'm not kicked out of the world like previous 3D Mario games. I loved 3D World because it felt like a throwback to the 2D era in many ways but MO kinda gives that joy when I first played Mario 64. Also, the Jump festival is the best thing in the series in 20 years. This game has so many little touches that just make it a true joy. Playing as a T-Rex causing havoc to seeing Mario Dance and the bosses are the best the 3D series has had IMO. Some of them feel more classic Zelda than Mario. It's a game that truly sells the concept of the Switch. You can play a few minutes at a time when on the go or spend hours when at home looking for every moon and secret.

Heard some Comix Zone music again on the VGM Jukebox this morning. Got me thinking, beyond the stylistitic gimmick of this game and the novelty... I think it's bad and honestly have never really liked it a lot, despite having grown up playing it a lot (seems like anyone that had a Genesis had it or knew about it). The small cramped level spaces for the comic pages are weird and the 1 life thing is wack, but I guess of course back then they wanted you to keep replaying this game forever to master and 1CC it.
