Haha, agreed. My list would consist of domestic releases and (much cheaper) Japan exclusives, but it would still come out at $1500 or so.

A Top 25 for the Atari 2500 would run around $75 MAYBE.

I find that there are a lot of RPGs that I won't revisit for sure. Most of my replayed stuff is NES, anything that only takes between 1-5 hours. There are exceptions, though; Chrono Trigger is almost a triannual ritual. And I'm sure I'll play through the NES versions of Dragon Warrior III/IV sometime in the future. Just too much nostalgia there.

I only really called myself a "collector" once I realized I was amassing tons of games I wanted to play, but would have no time to actually finish them in my lifetime. Even then, I only really buy games that I have some interest in. I don't specifically go out and buy rare games, although I stay cognizant of which ones are rare so if I see them in the wild, I can snag 'em. So as I've said before, I'm more of a "value" collector. In the moment, I buy stuff that interests me. For older titles, or rarer games, I'll purchase games that are priced well below their market value.

(Recent example: That game store haul with several top-notch Genesis carts. I would normally never have sought out El Viento or Trouble Shooter, but at 50% of market value, I had to do it. It also helps that they were good games on top of that.)

Only if you don’t shop around a little!

$75 sounds a little high for the top 25 2600 games to me.

(But I guess it depends a little on how you make your top 25 list)
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Want: Games!!!

I've always been big on replaying my old favorites, especially for short spurts, it's hard to beat Streets of Rage or DKC. Here lately though, I've been much more interested in old RPGs, some of which are pretty long and games I never thought I'd revisit. Everything from Baldur's Gate 2 to Jade Empire and KOTOR.

I actually find it hard not to play my old favorites when I have a clear gaming 'schedule'. Most of the time I'd prefer to go play Ninja Gaiden Black or Morrowind rather than try a new (to me) game. This makes the collecting bug easier to manage, when at least half the time when I want to play a game, it's one I have already.

I binged on the WRPG classics many years ago and dunno if I could ever go back. The thought of replaying a Wizardry or Might and Magic game seems unthinkable with my current schedule and lack of patience.

No worries, JRPG's are better.

I can enjoy either one, I prefer JRPGs but I can still greatly enjoy a good WRPG. Skyrim is not one of them. The game is so bad. Last gen on consoles had 3 great ones. Kingdoms of Amalur, Dragon Age Origins, and Dragon's Dogma.

I think WRPGs and JRPGs have the same problem as any other genre. Some are good, some are great, and some just suck. Although I believe that older JRPGs compared more favorably to the much more ambitious but rough-around-the-edges WRPG genre. As the tech has improved, though, WRPGs have had much more of an ability to hit those previous ambitions in a way that doesn't feel clunky; they've also managed to implement pieces of JRPGs as well. KOTOR immediately comes to mind, in what is effectively a melding of WRPGs with console-style JRPGs. (It's also the first WRPG I ever played through, no joke.) Interestingly, though, a lot of WRPGs feel like action-RPGs these days; I'm okay with this.

I feel like JRPGs don’t aspire to stretch the genre as much as WRPGs.
