I went about halfway through Shinobi on PS2, and ended up giving up getting distracted by another game. I might ought to revisit it, I've got a little more in the way of 3D gaming chops than I did back then.

I remember that season saw the revival of not one, not two, but three older properties, and somehow all of them turned out well!
- Contra: Shattered Soldier
- Shinobi
- Rygar: The Legendary Adventure

For my money, Rygar was the best of those games. :)

Rygar was really legit. God of War ripped off a lot of stuff from it. :P

Would love to hear some war stories from Shinobi PS2... the last boss took a friend of mine and I, HOURS. An entire night to beat. I was spending the night with a friend and was so furious and frustrated, that I swore I was not going to sleep that night until we beat it, lmao. We finally did, man it was glorious. I still think it was probably harder than Ninja Gaiden Xbox and any other "character action" game I've played, but it's pretty different too... the lock on and combo mechanics were weird. It was hilarious, in the last level there are hallways with NO floors. You HAVE to know how to perfectly do those lock on combos to chain enemies throughout this set of hallways at some point. This game was out to destroy you.

I've been meaning to check out Nightshade, which was kind of a sequel.

I've got it, but have barely played it. I have heard that it's a lot more accessible, but at the same time, that probably makes it more dull. The level design wasn't spectacular in Shinobi, so my guess is that without the difficulty, the whole thing suffers. But again, just going from what I've heard.

I bought Shinobi (PS2) when it was new, and really liked it, but I only ever made it into the city area, where you have to hop from wall to wall over bottomless pits. I gave up on it and sold it a number of years later, but I have the Japanese version now. At some point I intend to give it another go. I also have Nightshade (Kunoichi), and have played the first stage or so of it. It seems very different in terms of gameplay. Seems to be much more action oriented.

Thank you! I am glad to read that, not only do other people like Rygar (PS2), but they correctly recognize that it implemented a lot of really good 3D action game mechanics way before God of War.

Speaking of Shinobi, I think I must be one of the only fans of the 3DS game in the world... 8)

I like all the Shinobi titles. I feel like Shinobi 3 is a very different kind of game than the original or Revenge, though. And Shinobi X/Legions on the Saturn feels like it learned a few lessons from 3 and applied them back to the core model of Revenge.

The Way of the Samurai games are excellent, though they will require you to play through them multiple times to really get a hold of what all is going on and to build up your weapon stash and skills. There's a big learning curve, but it's well worth it. Eventually you'll go in solely to pick fights with different people and see whether you're good enough to take on the 100 man fights. When you can take the smiths on the highest difficulty, then you'll know you've made it as a samurai.

I have briefly played Blood Will Tell, but not enough to give a good report on it. I've heard it's quite good, though. I also owned a copy at one time, but it had issues, so I returned it. I kinda wish I'd kept it now and tried to resuscitate it; it's an expensive game!

Genji: Dawn of the Samurai has a lot in common with games like Onimusha 3. If you enjoyed that game (or DMC-style games), Genji may appeal. I don't know if it has aged well, but I definitely had fun with it back when I bought it. The PS3 followup seems not as good, though.

I have heard that Red Ninja is terrible.
