A possibly point for those is that Ristar is fairly widely available in (legal) emulated form and Rocket Knight Adventures is not, last I've seen. So that'd make RKA more logical to me.
A very interesting point that I hadn't even thought about. Thanks.

Wait, really? I've always wanted Ristar and thought it looked like a brilliant take on the 2D platforming genre. I remember playing the first level as a kid at a friend's house and enjoying it.

But yeah, Rocket Knight Adventures it is, I guess.

Ristar is awesome. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :)

RKA is the one I don't particularly care for (it's still pretty decent, though), although I thought Sparkster on SNES was great.

Oh man, what is happening here? Both Rocket Knight Adventures and Ristar are absolutely fantastic. They're about the best you can do for lesser known mascot platforming. I couldn't even tell you which one to get first, because they're both too good for me to pick a favorite. Both have great OSTs, great visuals, lovable protagonists bursting with character, tight controls, and more great level designs than you can shake a stick at. Get both immediately.

PS: Have you played Monster World IV already?

I honestly can't explain why I don't like RKA as much as I should. I mean, I thought Sparkster was at least 8/10 material. I had a blast with it. I should probably sit down with it again and give it another shot.

This thread might as well be the unpopular opinions thread 2.0.

For what it's worth, I like both Rocket Knight and Ristar. Rocket Knight is the far superior of the two though.

I haven't played the SNES Sparkster, personally. Most people seem to put it between RKA, and Genesis Sparkster, and I thought Genesis Sparkster was fairly good. (Not even close to as good as RKA, but still good.) So, I would have to assume that SNES Sparkster is pretty good too, but from what I've heard about, and seen of it, I don't see how it competes with RKA.

Basically Reprise, just get both.

You already bought the best game though, SHINOBI III. Top 5 Genesis material for me, a masterpiece.

There is no, "first." There is only, "together."
