Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest <---Good, hard, haven't beat it yet myself. <--- Yeah, I hear it's the best and as I own DKC1 and 3, it literally makes no sense that I don't own 2
Were you one of the crazy people (like I, and maybe even AJ) who prefers DKC 3? I do not care for DKC 2 at all. I find DKC 3 to be the best of the three by a wide margin. I feel somewhat validated in even Bone not liking DKC 2 when he played it. I suppose you might be right that it doesn't make sense that you don't have it, but from a personal standpoint, it totally makes sense to me that you don't own DKC2.

Saturn:
Resident Evil <---PS1 version not better? <--- Huge Saturn fan again and its ports intrigue me like I said. The Saturn version is a very decent port and has a whole load of extras that I believe may be exclusive to the Saturn version (although they could be on the Director's Cut, I have no idea).
I played the Saturn version, and enjoyed it. The FMV sequences are more grainy, and the load times between rooms are a bit longer, but I found those things to be excusable. Otherwise, it's a marginally nicer package than the PS1 original. There is an exclusive battle mode in the Saturn version. It's kind of cool.

alienjesus wrote:Just to add, I also don't think FFIX is overrated either - it's my favourite in the series.
Yeah, IX is possibly my second favorite of the mainline series, but I have to acknowledge that I was in high school when I played it, and haven't played it since. In hindsight, the fourth disc kind of forces the player to shut off his brain, and things like the Ark summon are exceptionally long. When I had all the time in the world, and a bit more patience for completely un-utilitarian panache, the fourth disc could still be enjoyable, but if I went back to IX today, I could see myself having a little bit of a tough time with it. The world, individual characters, combat and item systems, and call backs to early FFs were some of the things that really stuck with me, rather than the story arcs, and overarching narrative. Also, beating Ozma was one of the most triumphant feelings I've had in an RPG.

--and I don't care what anyone says, Tetra Master is better than Triple Triad.

I was indeed, although it was never an informed decision. I liked the original a lot as a kid and I also remember playing the third a lot at a friend's house and loving it too, so later on in life when I got a SNES, I picked it up instead of the second game, assuming it was the best. Although, like I said, it was just an assumption I had from my childhood. After spending a lot of time on the internet in retro gaming communities like this, I learned, of course, that the second game is actually the fan favourite.

Yeah, I've heard the battle mode is pretty fun. Another reason why I want the Saturn version.

Yeah lots of people love FFIX. Even Sakaguchi says its his favorite. After having played through and beaten FFIX myself (back in 2009), I do not understand why. Is FFIX terrible? No. Is it amazing? No. It's like a 7/10 in my book. Reasons? There's lots of reasons, but for the sake of time I'll just do a top 5.

Reasons FFIX is not awesome:

1. The protagonist and supporting cast look retarded.

Seriously. Here's your main character:
Image
He's an abominable hybridization of David Bowie and a monkey.

Your supporting cast's aesthetics only gets worse from there, a few examples:

Yeah I really want to save the world with that cast.

2. The back half of the game's pacing is horrible.

Sure the first half of FFIX does have proper pacing, things flow, you go places and do things in a determinable logical manner. But something happens around the second half of FFIX. The pacing becomes wonky and inconsistent. You will spend far too much time in big boring grindy places like Ipsen's Castle. Around 3/4ths the way through, I was just ready for FFIX to be OVER... but it just kept going, slowly.

3. FFIX's "plot" is terribly generic. Even for a FF.

Stop me if you've heard this before; great life (lifa) tree, gaia, crystals, evil industrial forces, and a teenager saves the day? Yawn. If this reason seems too trivial for you, then replace it with terribly slowly loading battles, with terribly slowly moving animations, that combine for a terribly slow combat system.

4. FFIX forces you to beat stupid mini-games just to proceed.

OMG did this aggravate me. Optional mini-games are fine. Forcing me to play a game of redlight greenlight just to steal a key, or clumsily swordfight in realtime, finding the knights of Pluto, timed hunting festival, and many more. I came here for turn-based battles and leveling up, not WarioWare.

5. The final boss comes outta nowhere.

Necron. The plot barely justifies its existence. You have no knowledge of who you are fighting, or really why, and this means you don't have a tangible impetus to enjoy victory. Sure, you get to beat the game. But it would have been so much more fulfilling to have killed a boss that meant something to the player. Sephiroth this is not.

So what is good about FFIX? The game has amazing graphics (at the cost of amazing load times), and pretty sweet music. For me, that was about it, really.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Now that is a thorough and in depth write up, thank you. You make some interesting points there and certainly makes me want to hang fire on picking it up just yet. Not that I'll never get it, but it wasn't top of my list anyways.

Exhuminator's love of King's Field and dislike of Final Fantasy IX just makes me think that he hates fun and whimsy personally.

For all the flak I give Final Fantasy, I do think the first eleven installments are worth playing today. And by "first eleven installments" I mean parts I-IX, Mystic Quest, and Tactics. The numbered games start to get hairy after that and you're better off sticking to spin-offs like Crystal Chronicles and whatnot.

Bone's got it, but I think FFX is great as well once I gave it another shot with the HD release. Tidus being this Meg Ryan goofball isn't really a bad thing, coming out of the depressing "I don't care" teen angst era of Cloud or Squall, etc haha. And FFX is the ATB combat system to perfection, along with some of Uematsu's best work ever. FFXII is amazing but should have been called Vagrant Story 2/Spinoff Something instead.

Worth noting pierrot has crazy thoughts and I have gotten the vibe Ex isn't hot on FF in general... so take those posts for what you will. :P
(just poking fun at you guys)

That said I got a big laugh out of that post (while agreeing with everything, especially the general "slowness" of the game and battles) and FFIX isn't something I care to defend, since I too think it's low tier. But every old FF up through FFX is pretty different and stand alone, it's totally worth checking them all out if you like some of them, and see what you see for yourself. My favorites are FFIV-VII.

I do wonder if the recent PC/PS4 release of FFIX will fix some of my issues. Faster loading times, a fast forward feature, etc. Maybe getting through battles is quicker. I'll check it out someday... but PC/PS4 FFVII comes first.

As for DKC... I remember DKC3 being pretty cool when I was a kid. It was a huge SNES game and still impressive even when the N64 was out. In retrospect though, it's Rare gone completely bananas with the collectibles and a case of just... maybe too much content. I finally replayed all of it a year or two ago along with the others, I usually have to brute force my way through the first two boring worlds, but the rest are awesome. Still some great David Wise music. I love the trilogy but the first is my favorite by a long shot and the simplicity is something I appreciate about it.

Man, I love Mario Tennis. I've played the mess out of the N64 game.

Alone in the Dark Dreamcast <--- Looks very pretty, otherwise pretty meh imo. Providing it's still cheap, then go for it. Otherwise, pass.
Assault Suit Leynos 2 Saturn <--- Do it! It's awesome. I prefer it to the first game.
Bangai-O DC <--- Probably, subjectively speaking, my favourite Dreamcast game. Get it; it's addictive, fun and there's nothing else like it on the system. It's a fairly open, 8-way shooter with huge explosions. Only downside is lack of VGA support.
Contra Genesis <--- Love this one, but it's brutally tough and really expensive these days. If you can afford it, then go for it.
Yoshi Wooly World Wii U <--- Pretty meh. Not bad, but I got bored of it.
Toad Treasure Tracker Wii U <--- Great. Bit short. Is it reasonably priced these days?
Paper Mario Color Splash Wii U <--- I loved this one and need to finish it some time. It's a great Paper Mario game and I was massively surprised by it. It's probably the best I've played in the franchise since... the second one?
Napple Tale DC <--- I've got this one. Seems quirky and fun, but have only played it twice haha.
Segaga DC <--- Yes! Get! Even if you'll never complete it due to the language barrier (I haven't, but have got far more than a few times.
Sturmwind DC <--- You should get this one immediately. Bump it up your list.
ARMS Switch <--- Avoid, unless you like shallow Wii motion games.
Mario Odyssey Switch <--- Erm, get this like now.
FE Warriors Switch <--- This one can wait for a price drop I imagine. I have it and honestly haven't had time for it with Mario and Doom
Valkyrie Drive Vita <--- Unless you're a huge fan of the Senran Kagura games and bouncing tits, I wouldn't bother. It's ok, but I prefer the Senran games personally.
Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Force PSvita <--- Mediocre. Don't bother.
Deadly Premonition PS3 <--- This is a quirky one. If you like weird, 'bad but good' games, then try it out. It's like Shenmue mixed with Silent Hill, mixed with Twin Peaks and is ultra cheesy. It also looks like a PS2 game.
Bomberman R Switch <--- Pretty meh. Get Saturn Bomberman instead.
Splatoon 2 Switch <--- Get!
Pokken DX Switch <--- Wait for a price drop, if one ever happens.
Puyo Puyo Tetris Switch <--- Love this one. Get it.
Danganronpa 1-2 Reload PS4 <--- More suited to the Vita surely? That said, they're awesome games, so get them on which ever console you prefer and what ever's cheapest.
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony PS4 <--- I'm struggling with this one at the moment. It's just not grabbing me like the first two (yet). Maybe I'm burnt out on the series.
Valkyria Chronicles Remastered PS4 <--- One of the best ad most underrated PS3 games. Get it.
Child of Light Vita <--- It's really well suited to the Vita. I have it on the PS4 as well, but played it way more on the Vita, so I recommend this version.
DMC HD PS3 <--- Yeah, it's a decent HD collection.
RE Hd collection PS4 <--- Yeah, no reason not to get this really.
South Park N64 (nostalgia reasons) <--- I know what you mean. One of my old mates from school and I lost countless hours with this one. It's actually a pretty terrible game imo. Still, that multiplayer seemed awesome at the time. The story mode though...
Rule of Rose PS2 <--- Good luck with that one, I've decided to take it off my list and assume I'll never afford it
Mario Party N64 <--- Why not Mario Party 2? Or do you already have it? 2 is my personal favourite.
Mario Party 3 N64 <--- See above
Lost Kingdoms Gamecube <--- I used to enjoy this game back in 2002? Can't remember much, other than it getting mixed reviews and
oo7 The World is Not enough N64 <--- It's a decent 007 game and probably one of the better ones not called GoldenEye.
Little Kings Story Wii <--- Get! A real hidden gem.
Dark Cloud 2 PS2 <--- Get!
Both Goemon games for N64 <--- Yeah, get.
Lion King Genesis <--- Get
Carrier DC <--- Can be avoided, unless you really like mediocre Resident Evil clones
Test Drive le mans DC <--- If you're a racing fan, this is a decent racer on the DC. Metropolis is better though, albeit a different style.
Trickstyle DC <--- I love this game, mostly for nostalgia reasons. It's quite cheap, so worth a punt.
HeadhunterDC <--- I would guess this hasn't aged the best (the controllers are clunky iirc); that said, the story, tone, characterisation and gameplay was pretty cool at the time. It's like MGS-lite, mixed with a few other gameplay styles and mechanics.
Light Crusader Genesis <--- Oh shit yeah, get this one dude! I loved it as a kid and it still holds up decently. The puzzles are really cool and it's really unique, since the dungeon is the main experience and the world outside it is the afterthought.
Landstalker Genesis <--- Yeah, this one is cool. I still haven't beaten it, but I intend to sometime.
techromancer DC <--- Awesome fighter on the DC. The console has loads of fighting games, but this one is pretty unique. If you like huge fighting robots, then this is for you.
Sonic Jam Saturn <--- Any particular reason? Isn't Sonic Mega Collection or just the original Genesis games just as good? I know it had a few extra features like easier difficulties, saves and the spin dash in Sonic 1 though. I can recommend it, but just thinking there's a million different ways to play the Sonic games these days. The 3D area is interesting, but not worth the price alone.
Outrigger DC <--- Not bad, a decent arcade shooter, but not lot of content really.
