I should clarify, I've watched and loved Bubblegum Crisis, Armitage III, Wicked City, Macross Plus, Oedo 808, Gunsmith Cats and Riding Bean, and maybe a few more. The only 80s sci-fi OVA I dug up that I couldn't get on with was Megazone 23.
Other good cyberpunk/sci-fi OVAs from 80s/90s:

AD Police Files
Alice in Cyberland
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku
Angel Cop
Agent Aika
Appleseed
Battle Angel
Birdy the Mighty
Black Magic M-66
Bounty Dog
Buttobi!! CPU (AKA I Dream of Mimi)
Dominion Tank Police
Gall Force (whole OVA series)
Genocyber
Gunbuster
Kimera
Iria: Zeiram The Animation
Leina: Wolf Sword Legend
Lily C.A.T.
Memories
Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01
Nora
Photon: The Idiot Adventures
Plastic Little
Power Dolls
Psycho Diver: Soul Siren
Robot Carnival
Roots Search
Roujin Z
Super Atragon
Video Girl AI
Zillion: Burning Night

Just throw a 80s anime to watch as I just finish the reboot, Sol Bianca. Two OVA episodes which is quick and shouldn't be too hard to watch. Not going to blow you away but it isn't too hard to watch.

For chuckster, I can back these up and the bolded ones get my highest recommendation. Love those.

I took off Genocyber. It's kind of fun bad though and has ridiculous gore and animation. If you like it, look into the director Koichi Ohata because most of his stuff is absolutely bad but painfully fun sometimes.

HOWEVER his magnum opus... MD Geist is amazing. Yes, I said it. Don't believe the lies, this is an awesome OVA with one of the best OST's out there and maximum fun. It has a weird legacy of being hailed as one of the "worst anime of all time", back in the day Central Park Media tried to make it their mascot for whatever reason. But I seriously don't get it, it's a completely competent and fun action OVA haha. The main character is like the damn villain, it's hilarious.

= yes this OVA has Kageyama songs
= GOD TIER!
= DAMN
= SAX

Wasn't kidding about that OST... HOT DAMN. It's like Votoms' jazzy new age sci-fi style on steroids.

Sounds like you all need some Dirty Pair in your life. The Rightstuf releases are amazing too, it's late 80's Sunrise with the best art and animation ever. Specifically I like the TV series the best, then there's a 10 episode OVA, and three movies. It's all good times and fun stuff. It stems from the creator of Crusher Joe, which has a solid movie and OVA too, but Dirty Pair is way more fun. If you guys like Bubblegum Crisis, Iria, Gall Force, etc, Dirty Pair is up there with those.

Some of the best openings ever:

Goku Midnight Eye is another one that seems a bit obscure. It's based off a manga from the creator of Space Adventure Cobra which is an incredible 60's styled pulpy sci-fi adventure action series, but Midnight Eye is purely Earth Blade Runner cyberpunk goodness. Yoshiaki Kawajiri directed the Goku Midnight Eye OVA's, so his amazing mature style is in there for sure (he did Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Cyber City Oedo, etc). Really, Cyber City Oedo is the best comparison... if you want something very close to that Goku Midnight Eye is it.

Space Adventure Cobra is better than this and everything on the list for my money though. Osamu Dezaki is my favorite anime director of all time and it's got the Macross composer.

Cobra and Ryo Saeba are the best pimps in anime.

All I got to say is... Wow.

Too much to quote but I can't thank you guys enough, Exhum, Xeogred, johnblade, isiolia, kuruwin, you guys are awesome.

@isiolia: I just said 80s and 90s because I love the style of those I've seen, but good animation knows no age limit! I appreciate those recommendations and I will check them out!

@Kuruwin: Mezzo Forte, I can dig it. I'll seek it out!

@Exhuminator: I have only seen Genocyber out of those, and I've only heard of a handful of them. I will definitely check most if not all of them out. I was legit worried there wouldn't be (m)any recommendations, this rabbit hole is deeper than I imagined.

@Xeogred: Now MD Geist and Dirty Pair I've heard of, and Midnight Eye looks like it'd be right up my alley from that cover. I love that jazz, so much of the 80s feel is about cities at night and jazz for me, don't ask me why. Also, Space Adventure Cobra is great, it reminds me of the Red Jacket Lupin Series, which is possibly my favorite anime. If you haven't played the Sega CD game I highly recommend it. It's very similar to Snatcher in gameplay and loosely follows the first arc of the series.

@johnblade: Sol Bianca, got it, thanks!

It looks like I have a busy weekend ahead!

Nice to see a Cobra fan. 8) Are you familiar with City Hunter? If you love 80's city jazz nightlife and all that... oh man. I like City Hunter even more than Cobra.

Speaking of Red Jacket Lupin, isn't that the second series? Looks like Discotek is releasing the second boxset of that soon I think. I though the first series was alright, but I tend to hear Red Jacket is the best so I'm excited to check it out sometime.

I don't want to write you another novel but yeah, my favorite anime stuff of all time is the 80's Sunrise mecha/sci-fi gold mine. So if you're cool with mecha I might have more recommendations. But I'll just say that Armored Trooper Votoms is my top favorite. It's interestingly divided up into four very distinct arcs too, the first is cyberpunk crime and mecha arena stuff, then it's Apocalypse Now, then Alien/Metroid in space, and the final arc is... Xenogears, something crazy like that. The director was truly influenced by Apocalypse Now and Blade Runner for some plot elements from interviews I read years ago.

If you enjoy the Mezzo Forte OVA, be sure to watch the TV series:

It lacks the OVA's glorious hentai, but is still a lot of fun.

Deep as hell. There are far more cyberpunk/sci-fi OVAs from the 80s/90s then what I mentioned

I only recommended some OVAs that I like. But my most favorites from that list before are:

Agent Aika
Battle Angel
Gunbuster
Photon: The Idiot Adventures
Plastic Little
Robot Carnival

You're in for some good times.

I finally got around to watching the first episode of Gallery Fake tonight. I enjoyed it. If it stays good I'll tell you guys more about it.

I watched Goku Midnight Eye today. I thought it was good, and I definitely got a strong Wicked City vibe. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants more of that feel.

I also watched Agent Aika. I loved the fan-service and the art overall was gorgeous. Gusto's voice in the dub was also hilarious. I really felt like they went off the deep end after the first 4 episodes though. Between the new characters, a new arc with sillier storylines, and decrease in art quality, it feels like the last three episodes were tacked on, an afterthought.

So far I'm digging these recommendations though, I plan on watching some more over the next few days.

A question about this one: do you recommend the original specifically? I read on Wiki the same arc was basically done as the original 6-episode OVA, a 14-episode anime, and then again as a 12-episode OVA as "All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku Dash!". Just wondering if you've seen the others or recommend one version in particular.

Strike Witches and Najica look right up my alley, I'll check them out! Those Aika prequels are a little later than I'd like but I actually dig the world so I'll look into both of those as well.

I actually had the wiki pages up for Votoms and City Hunter up as I read that! I'll probably track both down soon. I love the description and the influences cited are some f my favorites.

As for Lupin, I've only seen a bit of the first series, but I didn't care for it as much. There are definite Green-jacket purists out there but it's a different show. Maybe it's just that I saw Red first, but I feel the characters are developed into a much more likeable cast and the quasi-70s setting fits the series perfectly. I have watched the bulk of the red jacket series, and about a dozen movies/OVAs and I'd recommend it to anyone. It's episodic for the most part, so no major arcs that I can remember, but I like that aspect honestly. It's a show to watch more for the characters and comedy than the stories. For a show to just binge or have on in the background, it's perfect.

That DVD set looks killer, I remember having to track down the Pioneer DVDs years ago, some of the first anime DVDs I'd ever bought, and the first I ordered from Japan. I don't have them all though so I may get it just to have everything in one set.
