I've seen the first 999 movie, which I guess was also a super-compressed version of the story. I think I bought the DVD of the second but have yet to watch it.

I've seen Arcadia of My Youth (I actually won the Blu-Ray at a Discotek panel at AnimeNEXT). It's excellent. I don't know if it would make a great introduction to Harlock but it's definitely worth watching.

I'm looking forward to those Galaxy Express 999 blu-rays coming out.
I really wish Space Battleship Yamato would get a proper American release.

I prefer Mamoru Oshii's stuff to Akira. I don't really love Miyazaki's movies much either outside of Nausica. So you can all love my anime movie opinions.

I love Oshii as well, so I'm not gonna knock you. I especially love Patlabor, there's a series I really fell in love with and the movie really lived up, especially in the visual department.

Miyazaki is generally very good for me. Porco Rosso is up there as one of my all-time favorites, and Princess Mononoke was the first non-DBZ anime movie I ever watched. I know it's redundant to talk about Miyazaki movies really though, so I'll hush.

Your Name left me cold, I was disappointed after hearing so much praise.

I'm in the market for some 80s and 90s OVA action now. Recommendations are welcome and appreciated.

What are your favorite themes? Do you enjoy ecchi or hentai?

If you like cyberpunk, the original Bubblegum Crisis is a must. Crash continues Crisis but isn't quite as good. And Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 is.... weird. It's OK, but as a retelling of the original it's weak sauce.

Err... perhaps... 8)

I have really leaned toward Cyberpunk/Sci-fi and it is my main squeeze, but I'm in for anything.

I should clarify, I've watched and loved Bubblegum Crisis, Armitage III, Wicked City, Macross Plus, Oedo 808, Gunsmith Cats and Riding Bean, and maybe a few more. The only 80s sci-fi OVA I dug up that I couldn't get on with was Megazone 23. It had good points but it seemed very uneven to me.

I've eyed Bubblegum Crash as well, I actually watched the first episode I think. I'll have to check out more of it.

Was wondering....is Megazone 23 worth getting the DVD set. I heard stuff about this show but don't know if it's worth the money in the use market as of now.

If you haven't watched Burst Angel or Kiddy Grade (first season anyway) then maybe those. While they were released later (and are longer series), I remember them being kind of throwback type series. Birdy the Mighty maybe as well - manga in the 80s, OVA in the 90s, TV series in the 00s.

éX-Driver was a good OVA (albeit, again, from 2000) and short movie, doubly so if you like cars.

New Dominion Tank Police if you haven't watched it as well.

I throw Mezzo Forte at you. There's a version of it that cuts all the hentai and it works just fine without those scenes.
