Rightstuf is having a sale right now (until the end of the day, Nov. 6) that includes the Akira books. They're all 20 or less, each, which is definitely more appetizing than their usual price. I've been slowly picking the books up myself, piece by piece.chuckster wrote: As for Akira, it's a stone cold classic. I have been wanting to read the manga since everyone says it is so much better, but it's so expensive to get it all!

I just started reading the Dark Horse version off archive.org, it's really awesome. I already like it more than the movie, and i'm only like 4 chapters in.Michi wrote:Rightstuf is having a sale right now (until the end of the day, Nov. 6) that includes the Akira books. I also don't think the live action GITS movie was THAT bad. Had some cool effects, couple of cool looking fights. As an action movie, it was OK.

I bet it'll be amazing.
I heard James Cameron going on about this but it's hard to see it making it to the big scre... oh it says post production. Well, who needs the dag-blasted anime OVA then if there's a blockbuster hollywood adaptation of this heady anime! Ammirite?
The new GitS movie was bad, but not Dragonball Evolution bad. It looked good and the shot-for-shot portions were interesting. It just fell way short of the original, with a poor script and plot (they literally had a screenplay premade!). I really hated how they made it into a "your superiors are lying to you, find out the truth about how special you are" trope with GitS imagery sprinkled in. The casting was also poor overall. I don't care about the racial controversy, but ScarJo just isn't a very good actress, especially for a complex character or plotline. It seems like she read "Major is a robot" and decided then and there to be as flat as possible. Batou was good, I think.
As much as I like seeing things like this being presented to a wider audience, I don't see the appeal of live-action adaptations of animated movies or shows in general. Going from animation to Live-action seems like it only limits things. I much prefer the other way around, the artistic freedom and creativity of animation is well-suited for reinterpretation. It also allows directors/artists/animators to put their unique stamp on things.
Regardless I'll check out the Alita OVA, I love the look of the manga, it's so moody. It has a very noir feel.
Thanks for the tip! I'll take a look at Archive and see what I find. Online reading seems to be about the only way to go. I need to bite the bullet and get a bigger tablet or tate a monitor reading.SamuraiMegas wrote: I just started reading the Dark Horse version off archive.org, it's really awesome. I read all my manga on an Xoom tablet, works out well.chuckster wrote:Thanks for the tip! I'll take a look at Archive and see what I find. Online reading seems to be about the only way to go. I need to bite the bullet and get a bigger tablet or tate a monitor reading.
If you want to download manga, the best place is BakaBT. I just checked, and they've got complete torrents for both the Dark Horse and Epic versions of Akira. I'd give you direct links, but I don't know if that sort of thing is allowed here. Edit: Oh nevermind, looks like BakaBT isn't accepting new members right now. That sucks. Well, I checked nyaa.si and they've got the complete Dark Horse manga at least.

I snagged the Akira 35th anniversary manga box set. It's so pretty, and once I'm moved it's going to be my first reading project. So I'll probably get around to it sometime late December/early January (no way in hell I'm trying to pack it in my airplane luggage).

Archive.org has the downloads as well, I don't think there is a big zip of them. I prefer colored art, isn't there a B&W version as well though? Is it any different?Exhuminator wrote:I read all my manga on an Xoom tablet, works out well.chuckster wrote:Thanks for the tip! I'll take a look at Archive and see what I find. The original was black and white. Marvel released a colorized version based on the touched-up collected releases in Japan. Subsequent releases have been re-translations of the Japanese collected releases without Marvel's color work.

That's why I think the BakaBT/NYAA torrents are better, they have the entire thing archived in a single download.SamuraiMegas wrote:Archive.org has the downloads as well, I don't think there is a big zip of them.
The B&W version is the Dark Horse version. The colorized version is the Epic (Marvel) version. As to which is better, that is subject of weeby debates which rage unto this day.SamuraiMegas wrote:I prefer colored art, isn't there a B&W version as well though? Is it any different?
I got Ninja'd by Maru, oh well.

I've been watching School Rumble, always heard good things and it does hold up. Fun stuff and all the characters are cool.

School Rumble is great! Though I hear the manga kinda goes insane after the anime adaptations were finished.
