Rewatched Akira last night, forgot how good it was. Somehow forgot about Kay having powers in it too.

Very nice. Akira is my all time favorite anime film ever.

The two series I'm considering starting next are Megazone 23 and Gallery Fake.

I wound up watching the available episodes of Recovery of an MMO Junkie after Crunchroll came back up Saturday. Seems decent so far, but hasn't established much yet to really elevate it further.

Can't speak for Gallery Fake but as for Megazone 23, I couldn't get into it. I have my reasons (which I'll save since I don't want to influence the experience), but after coming off an 80s anime kick with Armitage III, Gunsmith Cats, Bubblegum Crisis, and a bunch of others, there were some things in Megazone 23 I just didn't dig as much. It could have also been burnout or just that I was looking for something different, but I gave it two tries about 3 months apart. If and when you do see it let me know your thoughts.

As for Akira, it's a stone cold classic. I have been wanting to read the manga since everyone says it is so much better, but it's so expensive to get it all!

Edit: I have been reading Battle Angel Alita online, I hear the anime isn't very good. Opinions?

Well the Alita anime is only a two parter OVA, they can only do so much with that. I think it's a good teaser for the manga. Never finished the manga but I loved it. I read up to some kind of death race Kinetica part. I thought the Five Star Stories OVA was cool too, but should only be seen as a teaser. That one I haven't read yet but it looks amazing. The same artist did the mecha designs for Heavy Metal L-Gaim.

Megazone 23 is cool for the visuals and aesthetics, but it's very disjointed with character designer changes and separate stories between the three parts. Turn your brain off and go in for the old OVA visuals and fun. It's good but yeah kind of mid-tier OVA level stuff for me.

Cyber City Oedo and Midnight Eye Goku are some of my favorites for the darker cyberpunk stuff, outside of all the awesome hot chicks kicking ass genre... Dirty Pair, Bubblegum Crisis, Iria, Armitage III, Gall Force, etc.

As a stand-alone thing it's not bad, though I think it more stood out at the time as opposed to being a real classic. As mentioned, the big consideration is that it's just a two-part OVA, so there just isn't the runtime to really do a lot.

The Battle Angel OVA only has two episodes, and they capture a lot of the first two manga volumes. I think the episodes do a very good job. Sure you're not going to get the complexity of the manga, anybody expecting that is foolish anyway. What you do get is very tight pacing, great storytelling, furious action, stone-cold atmosphere, and amazing artwork/animation. I've always loved it... but stay away from the dubbed version. By the way, did you guys know Hollywood is putting out a Battle Angel movie next year? ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0437086/ )

It could have been worse.

Much, much worse.

Given how long Cameron sat on the rights for Battle Angel, it's possible that he doesn't just want to slap the name on something.
