Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?

At this point it's clearly unpopular to be a fan of Mario 3D World. I loved it.

Got me excited for Mario again after the shit show of NSMB and I just really didn't like Galaxy.

I thought both 3D Land and 3D World were great, but World had more of a spark for me.

Now, NSMBU is the game that I just never really "felt it" in. I thought NSMB Wii was the much better game.

Hmm, U is the only one I beat. Liked the Luigi expansion too.

How is New Super Mario Bros 2? I remember hearing it has some coin collecting gimmick, but that's the one I haven't played yet.

I'm always going to have issues with these though, I think the art style stinks, the music stinks, etc, this aesthetic is in dire need of an overhaul!

I enjoyed NSMB2 well enough. It's got the coin-collecting thing, but you can still play normally. In fact, I'd advise doing so, some of the level design uses said coins to tempt you into risky behavior that will get you killed.

As far as aesthetics, I agree that it goes for a sort of super-generic presentation. On one hand, that makes the assets easy and cheap to generate, but on the other hand... it looks a little cheap. I would absolutely love it if they'd go more of the Rayman Origins/Legends route with those assets. I think all of the NSMB games play fine, except for my constant gripes about how there's a bit too much momentum to Mario's actions. And yes, I know I'm a broken record on this subject.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 isn't very new, really. If you've been playing New Super Mario games for a while, you've already seen everything this game will throw at you. That includes the aesthetics by the way. With challenges, the designers shamelessly regurgitate old concepts from Mario platformers of yesteryear. The one big "new" idea I guess, is to try and collect as many coins as possible. You're encouraged to collect one million coins, actually. So if you like to collect coins in Mario games, you will be in heaven here. For the rest of us Mario veterans, New Super Mario Bros. 2 is just brand new déjà vu.

I assume this will seem like an unpopular opinion just because it involves Mario, and not the phrase "10/10, always and forever." So, I'm going to be safe, and post it here:

I have no real interest in Mario Odyssey, for a variety of reasons, but I watch the Continue Show guys maybe a bit more than I actually should--may as well go for a two-for-one here, and say that I don't think Cuphead actually looks like it plays all that well, even if it can be entertaining to look at. So, I've watched them play through the beginning of Mario Odyssey, and a peculiar feeling hit me: Mario Odyssey seems, in many ways, to be Mario does Sonic: World Adventure, aka Sonic Unleashed. Except, instead of levels, there's mostly just the collection of hub areas around the world.

Sometimes I wonder if 10/10 is actually something that really means anything to anyone.

Given how subjective it is, it means nothing to me at all. I have played an absurd amount of games, and even my all time favorites I wouldn't give a 10/10 to. There's always something that could be improved. So when somebody says "10/10" I just take that to mean; "I had a super fun time playing this."

Since this is the unpopular opinion thread, let me say I'm with you on Super Mario Odyssey. I've watched videos, yeah, it's more 3D Mario. Hooray. Been there, done that, since the N64. I haven't seen anything in its videos that got me excited. Sure Odyssey looks decent, don't get me wrong, I can understand why people want to play it. Mario automatically equates to subconscious happiness for many people, I get that. But SMO certainly doesn't make me want to buy a Switch right now. Neither did BotW for that matter, and I actually played BotW. It's not a money thing, I could buy a Switch right now if I were so inclined. I just don't feel compelled to. I feel rather weird sometimes because so many people are crazy about the Switch, and I'm just not feeling it. But hey, maybe Metroid Prime 4 or SMTV will change my mind.

So far I have absolutely enjoyed Super Mario Odyssey, and think it's absolutely worthy of the 10/10s it is getting. It feels like the best of Super Mario Galaxy combined with the earlier, more open Mario 64 (and Sunshine, which is not my favorite). It's got just enough collection aspects to get that completionist vibe going, but not as overkill as Rare did at their worst. I love games where I get to poke around and find treasures, so this game is scratching that itch big time.

It does share a bit with Breath of the Wild, but at the same time they take different approaches to their world. Zelda turns you loose a lot more, letting you explore the expansive landscape in search of those shrines for that puzzle-solving dopamine rush. In Odyssey, each area basically is the dungeon (or whatever analogy you prefer), and poking around for all the baubles is the point. I'm absolutely loving the creativity Nintendo displays here; it gives me hope for the future that, even when Miyamoto and some of the other major names have retired, Nintendo can keep up the software quality.

Referencing previous discussions, I'm absolutely willing to give a game a 10/10, but that doesn't mean it's perfect; it just means it's one of the absolute best games I've played. Even Chrono Trigger, my favorite game of all time, has spots I'm not a fan of. Even Symphony of the Night, as many times as I've beaten it, has small little quibbles that could have been improved. But it's still amazing.

Absolutely, 100%, agreed on all accounts.

I feel a little at odds sometimes with not wanting to come off as an old fogy, waving his cane at the kids on his lawn, but also not wanting to give in to some vacuous sense of hip-ness by forcing myself to keep up with the latest trends. I don't dislike the idea of the Switch, but it doesn't compel me to get one, either. To be fair, though, nothing this gen really has. I actually own two games for the Wii U, and never even bought the console. The ennui is real.

I already know when I'll be getting a PS4, though, and at that point, I'll happily get Nier: Automata, as that's probably the first new release, in years, to make me really take notice.

I get it's the unpopular thread, but quite honestly if both games like Zelda and SMO that dramatically re-write many ways both those franchises potentially go forward do nothing for you, perhaps it's not the game, but the fact gaming just doesn't do it for you anymore. There's little to hate there, and this is from someone who was pretty bored with one (mario in 3D) and set on never touching against the other (zelda) because how rotten and repetitive to the core they got.

Maybe you're just that fogey you don't want to admit to stuck in an era of bleeps and boops, 2D style, simple but hard to master style stuff. Or perhaps you just don't like those genres anymore or nearly so outside of a title or two from that general format.

I don't get too excited for the PS4/Bone, because most of the big hitters on those systems also get PC ports. And I've already got a couple PCs.

Or maybe someone is just burnt out on Zelda and Mario in general. After three decades of playing many games in both franchises, the sheen can come off for some of us.

I can't say this applies to me. I was beating headset VR games last year, and this year I've beaten quite a few seventh gen 3D games. I have no dislike of innovation, nor new games in general. I've beaten a bunch 2017 releases this year actually.
