Nope. he's already talking about Shenmue 4. Seems Yu is wanting to stick to the plan of 16 chapter story. So far in 2 games, we have only played 4 chapters. (Shenmue 1 is Chapter 1,Shenmue 2 is 3-5. 2 was cut and turned into a comic) I would not doubt if 3 is about 3 chapters as well.

I believe Shenmue 3 is chapters 5-7. I'm not 100%, but I'm sure I saw or read that somewhere. It's not 16 chapters anymore, by the way. Yu Suzuki has been saying since the Shenmue postmortem event that it's actually 11 chapters and has been for some time.

I know, but doesn't Shenmue 2 technically end part way through chapter 5? I was assuming that the conclusion of Shenmue 2, i.e. 'that cliffhanger', was not actually the conclusion of chapter 5. Therefore Shenmue 3 will pick up from mid way through chapter 5. That could be an incorrect assumption on my part, but I'm sure Yu Suzuki said as much himself. There's even talk of them starting Shenmue 3 completely from the beginning of chapter 5 (in other words, remaking disc 4 of Shenmue 2) for the sake of story cohesion. Yu Suzuki said they were considering doing that, but were not 100% sure at this stage.

Cliffhanger felt like the end of a chapter and the beginning of another to me..at least that's how it's supposed to be done but maybe he just decided it ends mid-chapter. It would be stupid but if that's what he decided then that's what he decided.

I remember Yu saying in the interviews done around the teaser release that the chapters are essentially meaningless, at this point. He was basically saying that Shenhua was originally supposed to show up a bit later in the story, and that things from somewhere between chapter 3 and chapter 5 were mashed together into the end of Shenmue II. He also seemed to not consider any time Ryo spent on the boat to China to be a cut chapter. At any rate, I remember him saying that the story from here on will not follow his initial plans, to the letter, and there will be similar compromises as things progress.

Yeah, the chapters thing is a bit of a mess and I don't know if it's inconsistent translations, but little of it makes sense.

I just hope beyond hope that when shenmue is done that Yu Suzuki releases his notes and concepts in a giant collector's compendium. I would plunk down one hell of a large sum for that.

And yeah, I heard Yu is going to be interviewed in the Dreamcast Collected Works book, so I can't wait for that! There were 15 copies of the book signed by Yu that were put as a reward earlier too, but understandably they went as quickly as they went up.
