These ones do?! https://youtu.be/AhOz-wbY2fA

Worse than these? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUhpZqwE33Q

Some nice hints of dialogue that I just noticed in that dev report, also.

Yup. It's more animated but it's not natural and just bad. It's about as good as a half-broken Chuck E Cheese animatronic. ME:A is goofy and lifeless but at least it's funny.

Of course it didn't look natural... her body was still in the t-pose and is again... not a finished product.

You know the number one reason I play shenmue 1 and 2? THE FACIAL ANIMATIONS!

They look fine. The younger girl looked great, the fisherman in the supposedly animationless trailer(except for him I might add) looked great.

Not sure why people are complaining when the video is clearly just giving us a progress update.

Some folks feel super entitled and fail to grasp the very basic concept of game development.

The issue is every bit of progress they have shown keeps dividing fans. Some just accept the updates and others are more concerned. I'm on the concerned side because everything they have shown looks bad too me, like very amateur and not talking budget. This is not looking like it will be a good game to me. I showed similar concerns for Yooka and Mn9 early on and got the same reactions I'm getting now. I want it to be good and not shitting on it for the sake of it. My money is invested into it.

Why are people concerned about character models and facial animations in an indie, low budget, crowdfunded open world game that is trying to pick up where a niche, cult Dreamcast series left off?

You know what has shit character models and facial animations? EVERY OPEN WORLD GAME EVER. Why does Fallout get a free pass for example? Or Xenoblade Chronicles? Or loads of other open world games that don't have amazing character models.

Edit: And the progress so far is showing that Yu Suzuki is understanding perfectly well what made Shenmue so special and he is maintaining all of those Shenmue-eaque features perfectly. Stop being graphics whores.

Reminds me of when people excused MN9 graphics because budget and then Dust and a million other indie games with a fraction of the budget looked much better. Fallout games are pretty shit..at least the Bethesda ones are. DAI facial animations are fine..just the rest of the game isn't great. FFXV facial animations look fine. Witcher 3 facial animations look fine so no open world doesn't mean bad animations. The Shenmue updates have been all about graphics and visuals to show off. Budget is irrelevant to the concerns over the quality of the game itself. Nothing about this game seems like they really know what they are doing. Other games with small budgets look fine. it's not a budget issue. It's not a hair issue with Donte in DmC either. The issue is, the game is looking poorly made no matter the budget because it's just not supervised very well. . It looks like a fan made game..except worse. In fact, I remember some people who made some excellent looking fan remaking Shenmue 1. It looked far more professional than this. The dude was a nutter sadly and never finished it. Not on a technical level as it was maybe 10 years ago but it felt like someone who actually knew what they were doing and on no budget at all.

Shenmue was never open world. It was regional like Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii. XC wasn't open world but XCX was. DA:I is regional. People really confuse big world and regional with open. Botw Open, FFXV big world, Shenmue and Xenoblade 1 regional. Regional is separate sections locked behind story progression. loading screens between them as well. Big world everything is in the same space but some areas like regional are locked off until more progression. Open is the whole world is there and minus maybe a tutorial. The whole world is there and nothing locks you out.

Also funny calling me a graphics whore. I'm anything but. I'm more for artistic style than polygons. No one is expecting some 70 million dollar game, just something that seems to be made by professionals. It feels more like someone overlooking a game who has lost their touch and fairly clueless on modern game development. Just a reminder, Hellblade is an indie game.

In fact, that dude was hired by Yu Suzuki and is on the Shenmue 3 development team - the same one you're shitting on - unless you're talking about someone else who tried remaking Shenmue 1...

And comparing it to Hellblade (you're like the millionth person to do it - so it's nothing personal) is stupid as hell. The game can be beaten in a few hours, is linear and features next to no characters. Comparing those two is comparing apples with oranges. It's not the same thing as Shenmue, which is open world (stop with this 'regional' stuff - they were open world games restricted by the technical limitations of the time and the ambitions of the developers) and has hundreds and hundreds of NPCs.

I didn't call you a graphics whore. I said people should stop being graphics whores. Not my fault if that includes you :P You can cut it anyway you want, but all I hear is "graphics, graphics, graphics". Have you even read any of the interviews with Yu Suzuki on the game's progress? The guy is clearly putting every ounce of his soul and all the love he has for the series into this game. Shenmue has a very distinctive feel to its gameplay and story and I have not seen a single cause for concern yet. Everything I have read says to me "Yu Suzuki still 'gets' what made the original two games special".
