I don't know that the kind of materialism our kids will experience will be any better or worse than the kind we grew up with. Just different. They miss out on a lot of the awesome plastic toys, but we missed out on a lot of modern stuff, too.

Right. I know kids these days are obsessed with the whole 'blind bag' toys like Puppy in my Pocket, so there really isn't any escaping the materialism, but I am proud of the awesome power of 80s toys. That said, there's a ton of stuff out there these days that I would have loved to have had when I was a kid.

I think I got lucky with mine. She's much into horses/my little pony, paw patrol, disney dolls, a few toy cars, some random stuff, zhu zhu pets she found earlier this year, and the Nintendo stuff I've put in her hands (NES CE, GBC, and my moms pink DSLite.) That's much of her world outside of just using some magnetic toys and coloring/drawing a lot.

Everything has just gone online unless it's something you need in a pinch so that 80s/90s era mass walls of toys are gone and the hold outs are dying off due to their own mismanagement and the times (internet) crushing their profits.

There's likely to be some deals had eventually though. I for one hope they stick it out. Toys'R'Us is pretty cool, and I share similar member's thoughts that being a kid and walking around in one is pretty awesome. For our kids, that's something I want them to experience. On the other hand, I want them to value what they have, and there's plenty of marketing and advertising that I worry is making an impression on their little minds.

Hopefully they survive. Otherwise I'm going to snag a bunch of video games and legos on the cheap.

I've been going to Toys R Us lately, more so than normal, with my girlfriend as she typically wants to go there (I swear her inner child controls her) as the local one is near an easy intersection to get to and typically on the way. We never really buy things from there however due to the prices and if we do it will be on clearance. I will say they have a huge selection of toys and sometimes we will buy something if it catches our eye or we are already buying a few things but that doesn't happen often enough.

As for Radio Shack, I did find one that was still open near my doctor's office last week. I was surprised I found one. I think it is the only one left in my state.

In 1991 I went to Toys R Us to buy my beloved Sega Genesis. Yesterday I went inside a Toys R Us for the first time in years. I heard they did layaway at TRU, and I got the bright idea that I might try to layaway the SNES classic.

I walked past the Ninja Turtles section and noticed a stack of identical comic books in front of the toys. I picked up a comic book to find that it was a thinly-veiled advertisement for the Ninja Turtles Mega Blocks (or maybe it was Legos). Come to think of it, a lot of the cartoons we loved when we were kids were just thinly-veiled advertisements too.

I walked back to the video game section. No one there. I seem to recall that back in the day, the video game section used to be hopping. Not so much anymore. No customers or store associates in the whole department. Eventually I found a store associate. Dude was about twenty~ish years old. I asked him about layaway on the SNES Classic. He never heard of it, didn't even know what a Super Nintendo was. So he radios his manager to ask her. She says they cannot layaway an item they don't already have in stock.

I ask the young dude if the Ninja Turtle comic/promotional advertisement is a free gimmick. He scans the barcode and says, "four dollars". I thank him and ask him to put it back for me.

On my way out of the store I snap a few pictures of cool dinosaur toys that I'm sure I can find cheaper online. I think that just about sums up Toys R Us for me.

That said, my brief stint at TRU in college was the worst job I ever had. Never been in one since 2002ish.

Go back a couple decades before that picture. Loved the huge video game "Aquarium Glass" 1980s ToysRUs displays, but hated the ticket system. Go thru cash register line to pay and then wait for an employee with the key to show up at the front pickup room with another line of customers to get the Atari 5200 game. I still have my 5200 4 port since bought brand new at TRU, still running great for an over 30 year old console.

One of my friends who works at Gamestop also has a TRU job, and from what she's told me it still very much sucks to work there
