I haven't been updating this thread lately, but since it was brought up - I actually watched the first Transformers a couple of weeks ago. I had never seen any of them, and found the first one at a thrift shop for $3 so figured I'd see what it was like. I put it on while cleaning my room, and for the first 45 mins or so I was like "hey, this isn't terrible. I've seen way worse. This is actually kind of fun." And as hour two hit I was like "OMG why won't this movie just fucking END?!?!?!?!"

I saw maybe 45 minutes of the first Transformers on TV a few months ago, randomly while I was doing some stuff. Laundry, probably. It wasn't horrible, but it also wasn't good. I did not understand why they were choosing to reboot it as they did. The only other movie I saw in the franchise was 4, in the theater with a friend who was actually OK with 1-3. He was morose leaving the theater after 4. He was pissed. I was just annoyed I wasted my time and money. 4, as a story, as a movie, was complete and utter nonsense. It didn't have good narrative flow. The action all felt extraneous and without personality. the 3D was pointless. Most of the plot points came out of nowhere and then ultimately lead nowhere. It was what happens when you have an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters and you are hoping to get a Transformers movie script but aren't willing to wait for them to randomly crank out anything coherent.

The Lost City of Z is streaming on Amazon right now. It is another excellent film from an excellent director. I highly recommend it.

Perfectly put!

Almost reaches 2001 levels but falls quite short, mainly in the story department. Still, it's probably going to remain the best space film of the decade.

Guys, I saw the first Transformers in theaters. I never bothered with it again, and if I see Michael Bay's name attached to something, I now run the other way.

In the meantime, October is just around the corner...

I'm so ready. I bought a four pack of 80's horror movies yesterday, three of which I have never seen. The pack has Children of the Corn, Creepshow 2, House and Chud. I bought this mainly because I've wanted to see Chud forever, I've seen Children of the Corn before.

Ack what was that Lovecraft movie you recommended to me last year after I watched Re-Animator? I'm gonna order that on amazon so I can see it this year.

Edit: Found the post, it was From Beyond

Give it a watch if you are looking for more straight Lovecraft. It's a fun one.

Also, if you can handle silent films, I recommend the 2005 release Call of Cthulhu. It really sticks to that 1920s feel. Plus the movie poster is awesome.

Stayed in today feeling blue and didn't game much, so cue a crazy marathon:

Image
Breakdown (1997) was incredible and the main highlight for me. Feels a lot like a spiritual successor to Spielberg's debut Duel in a way. I love simple movies that take place over the course of a day, maybe even just hours. Kurt Russell and his wife go for a little drive and stop at the wrong gas station... from start to finish it was amazing.

Image
Leviathan (1989) sucked. It's the poor man's Thing/Alien, which I kind of knew going in... but it ended up not being worth the curiosity. Bleh.

Image
Death Wish (1974) again give me a simple good guy revenge story and I'm in. Charles Bronson doesn't even seem to be a great actor but has this weird charm. It was a good time. Keeping those streets clean. BANG

Image
The Hitcher (1986) Rutger Hauer playing one of the best psychopath's I've seen. He's such a crazy method actor. This one is dense with atmosphere and mood, great music, etc. It sounded similar to Breakdown but it's pretty different. A bit darker and more serious. Maybe not as well paced or realistic, but still really good thriller material.

Image
Split Second (1992) Rutger Hauer, I'm finally seeing him play a good guy... I think. This is without a doubt one of the most insane (hilarious) movies I've ever seen. You have to see it to believe it. It was a blast. I can't remember if a musical cue punch line ever made me laugh this hard. Takes place in London 2008 where global warming has ruined Earth and there's flooding everywhere. The whole movie is wet and dirty, along with this blue-ish tint. It's like it wants to be Blade Runner but comes of cheesier like Demolition Man with Commando's tone with some buddy cop elements mixed in. Yeah, it's fucking amazing.
