Confused about Metal gear series.
I want to play the Metal Gear series as a whole but i'm getting confused. What games do I need?
As far as I know the canon games are the following:
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Sold 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
The last two games are on systems I don't own nor I plan of owning so I will not get them, although I hear MGS4 is awesome I do not want to own any system just for one game, much less a PS3.
This leaves me with 5 games. However as far as I know there's a version of MGS3 known as MGS 3: Subsistance that includes versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear II. Those versions are remakes, aren't they? I guess they are preferible to the MSX versions even if they have some charm.
Also there's an updated version of Metal Gear Solid on the GC called MGS: The twin Snakes. Is it worth it or it's better to get the original version?
So this leaves me with MG, MG2, MGS, and MGS3 covered on two games. However it seems there are two versions of MGS2: MGS2: Sons of liberty and MGS2: Substance. I read somewhere that Substance is an enhanced remake. Does that mean that it has better graphics? I know it contains some extra missions but I don't know if they are worth it.
So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Confused about Metal gear series.
My first line of advice would be to put down the crack pipe - the PS3 is an amazing system with a ton of great games, not the least of which is MGS4.
Also, the remake of MGS was a GCN exclusive, made by Silicon Knights out of St. Catherines, Ontario (plug - have friends who work there) and is damned near impossible to find - it's better to get the original if for nothing else more than its' historical value.
The version of MGS2: Substance I have is for the Xbox and it has a graphically superior version of Sons of Liberty plus 350 VR missions, 150 little extra missions, unlockable characters and so on - it's worth it.
What systems do you have? If you have the PS2, the Metal Gear collection (3 discs of first 3 games) is worth it.

Amusingly enough, figuring out which Metal Gear games is still easier than figuring out the storyline.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes <An enhanced remake of the original Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance <An enhanced remake of the original MGS2:SoL
Metal Gear Sold 3: Subsistence <An enhanced remake of MGS3:SE
None of those games should run you up to much money, even brand new, and they are all enhanced versions of extremely great games. MGS3: Subsistence does come with both of the original Metal Gear games but I'm not sure if they are enhanced remakes or just ports. Either way you're getting three games in one.
Also, Cassidy is right. A PS3 is definitely worth it. Although seeming as they have made enhanced remakes of every other MGS game, it might be more worth your money to wait for the inevitable enhanced remake of MGS4:GotP. Also, the PSP can be a good system if you're willing to take the time to look past the utter crap games that are on it and find the few really good gems(At least in my opinion).

I agree with these statements. PS3 has really hit its stride and has a bunch of quality software out and a lot more coming soon. As for PSP, there is a lot of garbage, and at stores like Target and Walmart, or even Best Buy, the PSP section is getting smaller and smaller. Personally I dont buy many PSP games anymore, because after getting just about everything I wanted, the other games I want are few and far between. I will say though, that MGS: Portable Ops is a very cool game. Its kinda getting hard to find (you can find the Portable Ops Plus game every where, but unlike the followups to the other MGS games, it is not a remake with bonus options.)

Twin Snakes is great. The graphics on the PSX just don't hold up IMO. I think it's great to have an update of such a great game. I know someone posted it was impossible to find, but I just saw a copy today at my local gamestop. It wasn't cheap, but it was there.
Re: Confused about Metal gear series.
When gamestop had the buy 2 get 1 sale a few week ago I found a copy in there. They actually had 3 copies that day. I dont think they are too uncommon, but they do usually cost like $30-$40the King wrote:superlarz wrote:The Twin Snakes is awesome. I prefer the older graphics- there's some retro charm.the King wrote:superlarz wrote:The Twin Snakes is awesome. From what I have played so far, its MGS 1 with MGS 2 style gameplay and graphics.

If you do get all the games, you can play them in the order they came out, or you can try something I want to do sometime- play them in the story's chronological order...
MGS3, MGSPO, MG, MG2, MGS, MGS2, MGS4
