Egghead Software
Okay this goes back, anyone remember the Egghead computer stores? A time when consoles took a dive and the early home PCs took over.
My first exposure to the Atari 8 bit computer version of much better E.T. over the 2600, Choplifter with the beautiful Kraft joystik analog collective control on the Apple II. The software that really caught my eye back then were the individual floppy disk packs of Williams Defender, Joust and Robotron teasing to buy a Mac years before MacMame followed by PC Mame became popular.
Egghead was the first store I ever bought a PC game from -- Konami's strange but fun conversion of The Simpson's Arcade Game. Wish I still had that green box as it was pretty cool but it went into the dumpster years ago when it failed to keep working. (First shareware was Wolfenstein3D on a floppy from a random computer shop that would place ads like Egghead too.)

Awesome, man! I'd love to hear some of your stories!
The location I frequented was Lake Grove, right behind the Smith Haven Mall. It was the closest location to my house, but it wasn't exactly around the corner. I wasn't driving age, so I would have to beg my parents' to take me there. Probably for that reason I remember my trips to the store being extra special.
Speaking of that area and how awesome the 90's were, do you remember Sports Plus? That place deserves it's own thread, but for those that don't know check out this quick video. They had a pretty large arcade floor. But they also had an ice rink, laser tag, bumper cars, rock climbing, and other activities.
The Lake Grove store was also the district managers home store so that was not where you wanted to work. Every Funco employee on long island would goof off and play games all day except the guys who worked at lake grove.
Sports plus was amazing, had so many fun times there. Used to alternate between capcom fighters and tekken night and just beat on anyone who challenged me ; )
I miss arcades in general, I work in a middle school and I think it is so sad that kids today will never get the full arcade experience that we all had growing up.
My local FuncoLand was in Paramus, NJ, in the Super 17 shopping center. Good times! That was the only place that let you try games before you bought them, and I made quite a few good purchases there. My best score was a $2 copy of The Guardian Legend (NES) in the late 90s, but I also got some cheap SNES games before they got pricey a few years later, Super Metroid being one of them.
We hardly knew ye!!!

I didn't get to go by EBGames very often, it was around two hours away, and we didn't go to Jackson that often. Still, I remember snagging a copy of Zoda's Revenge for something like $2 complete. Good deal to say the least.
