All you really have to do is take a breath and spend 10 minutes looking at a static image/problem and figure it out. Not let it get it to you. It is very counter intuitive for the normal mentality of a video game. Usually with 'problems' or 'puzzles' in video games i just start trying shit until midway through i realize what i'm supposed to be doing or it just works... that or the puzzle is pants on head retarded easy. Layton is a refreshing change of pace from that. You just have to go in not like you are playing a video game, but playing the puzzle section of a newspaper and try to remain focused and not loose your cool. It is more you vs yourself than you vs game IMHO.
See, I dont have the patience for this. If I cant figure a puzzle out in 10 seconds, I just get too annoyed to even think, and then all chances of even finishing the puzzle are gone. The rage distracts me from any critical thinking.
Try Warioware there easier :D. Just kidding, that game is great. Fun, original and challenging everything I like about about gaming.

I love this game. I think it's one of the best games on the DS. It does take a small amount of patience, but it's rewarding when you figure a puzzle out. It's really a logic game. If you have logic, you can at least do a few puzzles. The tough ones consist of trial and error and methodical thinking. I don't think it's fair to criticize the game for it's difficulty; that's exactly what makes the game what it is. If it didn't have said difficulty, it would be boring.

I never had you pegged as an impatient, intolerant rager.

Oh wait, yeah I did.

In other news, my wife completed the game in a few days using around 4 tips grand total.

The only problem I had with the game was all the puzzles that were difficult due to purposely vague wording. I can't stand those kind of puzzles.

I 100%'d the original warioware on GBA. Havent really got into the later ones or the rhythm heaven games. It was kind of a fad to me.

And what's wrong with that? I'm not even surprised at my reaction to this game. I don't expect anyone else to be. I mean, I've spent 21 years associating video games with, basically, blowing shit up, kicking some ass, or performing crazy stunts. Then along comes this surge of educational games....and thats fine.

But the problem is how so many people who's opinion I trust tells me to play this shit. I just don't understand how they enjoy it and I can't. I mean, it must boil down to how I require instant gratification from a game, and if it feels like a job, it's a failure. This game feels like homework. I got my high school diploma. I'm done with these things. Nothing in this game teaches a real world skill anyway. At least all my action games dont pretend to teach me a skill. Nobody fucking builds with matchsticks.

I don't know how many times I've quoted something you've written, and followed it up with comments like "personal preference".

My suggestion to you is to spend more time playing the games you love, and stop trying so hard to play games you don't like. I don't play RPGs because I know I don't like them. No point getting all frustrated when I play a random Final Fantasy title and hate it despite the rest of the world continuing to tell me they're the best thing since sliced bread.

Personal preference, my friend. Let it go. :)

It's just a need for variety. If there has to be blood in every video game you play, or even the other way around, I think there's something wrong. A gamer can't just restrict themselves to a single genre. You need to expand your horizons. When you grow weary of the common FPS or action game, you look for something more relaxing and intellectual to balance out; Professor Layton fills that space quite nicely, with intuitive gameplay. It's really refreshing to play a game that doesn't require the split-second, heart-racing reactions of a SHMUP. I'm glad there's still fun puzzle games like Professor Layton, Portal [yes, I know it's also an FPS], etc. It's almost healing, in a way.

You really don't know who you're talking to. I play all genres. Layton just isn't as good as people said, and so I made a thread. If I only liked one or two genres, I'd be making negative threads about every game outside of those genres. Layton was just surprisingly bad.
