Is the PS2 Grandia 2 THAT much worse than the DC version?

i bet if you bought the dreamcast version, you would feel all happy and warm inside..

At $10, I sure did. It was missing the sampler soundtrack CD, but I just put all the inlays and such into a single disk jewel case. Looks fine.sneth wrote:i bet if you bought the dreamcast version, you would feel all happy and warm inside..

Pirated copies of a great deal of Dreamcast games suck because of compression, as an FYI for other people reading this. Dreamcast has the unique property of being one of the only (THE only?) disc based system to use a format where home capabilities for burning discs for the system are pretty much non-existent. GD-ROMs have more space than a CD-ROM, thus any Dreamcast game using more data than a CD-ROM will likely suffer from lowered sound quality (the most common sacrifice) and visual sacrifices.Mozgus wrote:The pirated copy sucks. It was split to two discs, and all the spell effects got horribly compressed. I think a lot of music was monoized too. At that point, the PS2 version is the better option.

Though it may be somewhat irrelevant, I'll also point out that Skies of Arcadia is also (at least, it was for me) unplayable on CDs. Granted, fitting the game on 2 CDs was a very impressive technical feat (if I recall correctly, it used some fairly advanced compression/decompression techniques), but resulted in terrible slowdown, especially when entering battles.

Yup. It's a must-buy, and not just for that reason.dlmvii wrote:Though it may be somewhat irrelevant, I'll also point out that Skies of Arcadia is also (at least, it was for me) unplayable on CDs. I'll be honest, I own the actual Grandia 2 on Dreamcast, so I can't really attest for the quality of the burnt version. I just saw that it wasn't an Echelon rip, thus assumed it wasn't horrible. Still, it's only the larger games where downsampling is a problem... then again, I play on a mono television, so who knows how incorrect I might be.
Point is, the man doesn't own a Dreamcast.

I have the PS2 version and the DC version, but I haven't played through them. Instead, I played through the PC version. That was a major pain. I am not sure why I had the problems that I did, but most of the video clips did not work correctly but I was able to muddle through. For me, this was easier that playing either of the other versions since the living room TV is almost always in use by the grandkids and I didn't want to desert the family to play in the bedroom.

I have to wonder if this is a problem that is hardware dependent or if the PC port is just flawed. I would think that the PC port came from the DC version as many games at that time did so.

I would of held Skies of Arcadia in higher regards if it weren't for the plodding battles. They are just so slow, and make some SNES RPGs feel like lightning in comparison. Just about everything else in the game was amazing though.
