Region mod help please for TurboGrafx

Post by bacteria »

Hi - help please!

I have made an 8P2T switch and wired my US TubroGrafx in accordance to the diagram below - it plays US games fine, but refuses to work with my Japanese games.

What else do I need to do to make this work please?

Image

As you see from below, I am at the last stage of the wiring for the system; I have already successfully rewired most of the game pins as I had to make the board smaller to fit into my case:

As you see, I am hardly a noobie!

So, help please - I have a few Japanese games I want to play on this!

I almost cried when i saw that picture of that poor little thing all torn to shreds like it was on an operating table. I never could mod anything. I just went for getting a duo from japan so i could play all cd's and japanese hucards. I never wanted to spend all the money for the american tg-16 cd system. I hope it turns out well.

I cut off about 40% of the board area and did a massive amount of rewiring, to the very tiny chip pins. System works fine on the US games, just can't make the Japanese games work! Hoping someone can help.

UPDATE:

Turned out I had some gunk in the switches which stopped some of them making proper contact. Sorted this out.

I got this to work, I can play US and Jap games now fine on the system.

Lemme guess, you're transforming this thing into a portable of some sort. I've been waiting for a suitable replacement to the Turbo Express.

Indeed; same vacuum formed case I used for the PSone system (as per my sig and website). Will use my case for a variety of systems.

The outline white paper in the pic above was the size I had to get the board down to to fit!

You should have tried to get a Japanese PC-Engine unit, then. They are already more compact, and you just have to ground a single pin to bypass the US region lockout (after swapping the card slot pins, anyway). What's the max resolution on the screen you are using? The PCE does a lot more resolution-swapping than either the SNES or Genesis.

I didn't realise at the initial time that the Japanese system could do US games, what I had read said not; by the time I found you could, I already had the system.

Screen will be official PSone 5.4" screen - 320 x 240

The TG16 I got has PAL output (composite) rather than the usual NTSC (I am in the UK); however, if I can get good results on RGB, I might use one of my NTSC screens instead.
