I doubt you would have commented at all if every character in the game was male, or if the main character was male and all the villains were women. Why do you think that is?

It took five games for Gears of War to have a single female protagonist.

I never really felt like she was a Mary Sue. Sure, she was awesome, but most action heroes are. She expressed a lot of self-doubt and burden through the game, not to mention almost getting killed quite a few times. She's completely at the mercy of one of the big villains right at the start of the game.

As far as the feminism is concerned, I'm pretty sure Juan is speaking to what some would term "modern-day feminism", some of which has a misandrist bent to it. I felt like things were handled quite well in this game.

Also, as far as her being so awesome, one would expect as much anyway, given that... oh, wait, I probably don't need to spoil plot points. Regardless, there's a good reason for it.

See also, nearly every other protagonist character in nearly every video game ever made.

Pretty much. It's a genre trope, so it's expected. Most games aren't a lot of fun otherwise.

That's not feminism. I can walk around call day calling myself a stegosaurus, but that's not going to make me a stegosaurus.

Dude, you are the most stegosaurus-like stegosaurus I have ever seen. Totes dinosaur, don't deny it.

I agree it's not feminism, but it sure doesn't keep them from calling themselves feminists.

Anyway, so as not to go the way of another thread, H:ZD is good stuff. It ain't Breath of the Wild, but not much is. Although I suspect some of my joy with BotW was how different all of it felt. I've never played an open-world game implemented quite that way, and while I had my gripes, it definitely deserves every bit of success it has gotten.

Until, you know, we all turn on it when the next one comes out, as is our wont to do with Zelda titles. ;)

EDIT: Also, T-Rexes in F-14s for life.

This is true, but if OTHER folks do so, as well, or let it slide when people falsely call those people feminists, then we perpetuate the lie that feminism is about anything other than equality.
