Shenmue because it looked so real.
Mario 64 as controlling him in a full 3D space was mind blowing.
Mario 64 DS. Well this one is a bit personal. In 1999 one night I had a dream of playing a 3D Mario game on a new horizontal handheld from Nintendo. When GBA was announced I thought maybe it's the system. Nope. 2004 that dream became a reality. Now playing 3D games on a handheld is a given but I still remember a time when you could only literally dream about it.
Also almost everything Dreamcast blew me away that first year.

Summon Knight by the way is a very fun action dog! I highly recommend it. I powered through that game during a time when I found that genre to be quite dull.
Oh man....I need to find a way to get that soon then. I had the first one and lost it and have been itching for months to play it and finish it.

I'd say that there are three immediately come to mind at least in terms of how astounded I was at the time.
1. Halo 4's cutscene absolutely blew my mind when that game came out. No joke, when I first played it, I was halfway through the first cutscene before I realized that it wasn't live action. I was like "How the hell can the 360 do this?!?"
2. When the 3DS first came out, I couldn't believe what I was seeing was real. I'd seen 3D movies and stuff, but to have legit 3D without the need for glasses was a completely surreal feeling for me. I remember when Resident Evil: Revelations came out thinking "I have literally never felt so immersed in a game." It felt like I was looking in a window at a real, other world.
3. The Switch. The whole thing still blows my mind. Like, I know that laptops are portable, and I know there are some pretty beefy tablets, and Nvidia's got their Shield, but to see something so damn small be able to produce such unbelievably good visuals left me speechless at launch and still today. I still have a hard time believing my eyes when I'm playing Fast RMX in handheld mode.

I think this is where I plug Horizon: Zero Dawn. Seriously, the PS4 is pushing some amazing visuals, even on the stock unit.

Breath of the Wild. because it's the first game that is based on a promotional art piece from the 80s that came to life....30 years later. 8-32 bit era I loved to look at backgrounds in games and wanted to explore those. That Zelda art from the 80s where link is on a crag overlooking Hyrule at dusk I just dreamt of exploring that huge world.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Hot damn that's awesome.
Breath of the Wild in a lot of ways is kind of Zelda 1 haha. There's dungeons vs shrines for some differences, but otherwise it feels like they could have started from the same blueprint.

N64 comes to mind, when it launched. At the time, 3D accelerators on PC were potentially good, but most of the early ones on the market supported maybe a handful of titles, and could still end up running worse than software rendering (looking much better though).
Then here comes the N64 for the cost of one of those cards, actually running Mario64.
Starfox actually running on SNES was impressive as well.
There are a lot of modern games that will make me stop and just look at the scenery. The amount of artistic effort going into them is astounding.

RGT: August looks like it's going to be a pretty crazy month for new games I want. Where as most new releases this year have been pretty spread out for me, this month will have Sonic Mania, Madden 18, Mario + Rabbids, and the friggin' XCOM 2 expansion. Damn.
