Any settings you find underutilized in games?

That could be really cool, but also difficult to play. It might in some ways resemble that game that dude made about his son's cancer.

I was thinking something like Earthbound or Undertale. A bit bizarre RPG and the battle system would not be attacks or anything but a mix of getting better at social skills in talking to "enemies" but sometimes. I haven't fully thought it out yet but if I had to guess I'd add more to that aspect and maybe have the final boss as the MC's own paranoia.

Pick up RPG Maker and make it happen. Even if your first few drafts are rough, it might get someone else interested in your ideas and grow into something bigger.

I have definitely played a lot of indie stuff that explores more abstract ideas like this, usually by creators who have the very disorders they are exploring. It's the kind of oddball non-commercial stuff that makes me love the indie scene so much

If you haven't played it, To the Moon does feature autism fairly prominently.

Also, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, which is out in a couple weeks or so, has made a point about the main character having some sort of issues...though probably not very grounded.

Probably the difficult thing is not turning it into a superpower, a la The Accountant.

Yeah I should boot up RPG maker again.

I will never play anything else of Ninja Theory again. Their games are just awful.

The Idiot Savant trope is an idea attached to autism that seems unable to die. It needs to, though.

I would like to see more fantasy RPG's based on non-traditional cultures. Most fantasy RPG's are either based on western European style fantasy, like Tolkien, or on Japanese folklore. I love both of these settings, they're a lot of fun, but some more variety would be welcome.

So far we've got a decent bit of Polish fantasy and folklore with the Witcher series, which I love to death. But how about a fantasy game set in Africa, India, or Russia? I would love to experience the mythology and folklore of a wider variety of cultures through a fantasy RPG, or any video game really.

Through the journey you get actual narration of that culture from an actual native of that culture. I'd love to see someone take something like that on again but make it fun to play. Maybe team the people behind Never Alone with the people who made Journey/Abzu.
I like this. Goes well with MrEco's point about mythology from cultures besides generic European mythology and Japanese. I don't know how much of a chance we would get with Native American culture though, I'm not sure if those folks would be willing to let their culture be lended like that, and the gaming industries record on dealing with culture is pretty bad all around unless the makers are from that culture, as you suggested.

Same with the Middle East suggestions. I would gladly welcome anything not related to modern wars over there. We do have a bit of that touched on thanks to RTS games and things such as CKII, but we could always use more.

Psychological stuff is an interesting one. If its handled with care, great. I do worry about someone not taking the proper care with it, as has been mentioned. I personally have a hard time visually imagining how that would work. I know that indie developers have pulled off some nice stuff.
