The BEST ever! & My FAVE ever! (read OP)

Post by Segata »

Simply do 2 things. First post what you think is the best game ever made and briefly why. Then post your favorite game ever and briefly why it is so.

The BEST EVER!-
Pac-Man. Why? It's the perfect game when you think about it. Besides being one of the first gaming Icons the game had "Pac Fever" for a reasons and why to this day 30+ years later people still play Pac-Man. The game is timeless. It does not age. Google let's you play it free if you google Pac-Man. It's easily one of the most repayable games ever made as well. Yes there is more complex games but that's the point. Pac-man's simplicity is what keeps it the best game ever made. This game is not one of my favorites at all. In fact I was never a huge fan. I do recognized there is a good reason it's still played today when no one now remembers Robo Dangar despite how awesome that game is.

My favorite EVER!-
Ys Books I&II TurboGrafx16 version. This is one of the best games ever IMO from. Ys sorta feels the first time playing it was if you made NES Zelda a RPG and gave it speed. Short as it's only 12 hours each game. It's 12 hours of gaming bliss however. TG16 version has the first voice acting in a JRPG...and it's actually GOOD! The music by Yuzo Koshiro is his best work ever IMO. In fact it's my favorite OST to any game ever. On the surface nothing truly stands out. You buy armor go form town to town. Kill bosses in dungeons. Thing is with the music and speed you do it makes it so fun. I also love the concept of rediscovering a lost society. The intro on the TG16 version STILL gives me chills every time I see it. This was the first CD based console and boy they showed it off well. There is a good reason this game has quietly become one of the most ported video games in history. Oh and Skeletor from He-man is the narrator for Ys  Every time I play this game I almost feel like a kid in the early 90s late 80s playing it for the first time...and I only discovered this series 7 years ago when I was 27.

The best ever: Doom 2 for the PC. This game has aged like wine. Other shooters - even shooters far more advanced than Doom - impressed the heck out of me on launch day. But as the years passed, they aged like milk. Some are so dated I can't even enjoy them anymore. Doom 2 was a 10 out of 10 in 1995, I still consider it a 10 out of 10 today, and I think I'll still consider it a 10 out of 10 in another twenty years. It's less like an FPS and more like an 80's arcade shooter such as Robotron 2084 that just happens to take place in a first person view. Something about the way everything moves in the game space feels perfectly elegant and balanced to me.

My favorite ever: Sonic 3 and Knuckles. I got this for Christmas with a shiny new Sega Genesis in 1995, so it's very special to me. There are better games out there, and I'd rather not be stranded on a desert island with just Sonic 3 and Knuckles for the rest of eternity, but it's the one game I've been constantly fond of for 22 years. I still get warm memories from the very sight of it.

BEST - The Last of Us. There are games that have done story better, games that have done character development better, games that have done voice acting better, etc., but in my opinion, no game has done this much this well. No game moved me emotionally the way The Last of Us did, and no game immersed me the way The Last of Us did.

FAVORITE - Fallout 3. Fallout is my favorite game series in general, and while Fallout New Vegas and especially Fallout 4 made big improvements over 3, the feeling of being immersed in this wasteland for the first time is something I'll always remember. The choice of how to explore, to be good or evil, to help or kill - all in the context of a nuclear armageddon - was amazing. Also, as an American history teacher, the setting of a post-apocalyptic Washington DC has an irresistible eerie allure to me.

It's all subjective and no one is here to try and change opinions but I never get the TLOU love for it as a game. As a TPS it's average. The human AI is worse than N64 AI and not joking on that. Everything else is well done...well they got my city wrong but whatevs. As a game it's just meh playing it so that's where I get hung up on people saying it's the best game ever made. Different strokes I know. Just had to say it.

i considered making some pedantic post about not being sure what the meaningful difference is between "best" and "favorite" but that'd probably just turn into me barfing a buncha wanky garbage about art or whatever.

anyways

best = yoshi's island, incredibly creative, gorgeous, and super well designed. Also ever play the touch fuzzy get dizzy stage while stoned out of your mind? Shits really hard.

fave = snowboard kids 2. Such a fun, memorable, and creative take on kart racers and one of my biggest personal artistic influences. Its the kind of game I endeavor to make.

Best- MGSV. The gameplay is complete perfection. The story lacks, but the gameplay is so fucking buttery smooth it makes up for it.

Favorite- hotline Miami. So fucking good.

Best Ever - Super Mario Bros

Not really a fan of the first game myself but it's hard to deny the game changer that it was and its influence is felt to this day.

My Favorite - Mega Man X

Hardcore robot on robot action, set in a dystopian society and lined up to a rocking soundtrack. Add in the collectable armor upgrades and over the top boss fights and you've got the best action game of all time.

Impossible to answer either question. Too many great games released over the years, I never understand how people can narrow it down to just one game for "best" or "favorite".

My FAVORITE ever: Fallout: New Vegas. Probably. My mood changes from time to time, so I can never permanently decide on what my favorite game is. But most of the time I would pick New Vegas. The reasons being solid FPS combat, with a large amount of character customization with all the stats, perks, and weapons. On top of that it's got an incredible story, a bunch of amazingly well written characters, and a variety of engrossing quests. And last, but certainly not least, it's got a huge and very well designed world that really feels like a living place that could theoretically exist, which makes it very immersive. Possibly the best designed world of any game I've played.

(Sorry but i'm not gonna give an answer for "best" because having that as a separate category implies that there's some sort of objective quality that makes a game "the best" even if it's not your favorite, but there really is no such objective way to judge games. I mean the fact that everyone in this thread so far has given different answers for their "best" kind of proves there is no objective measurement of quality, doesn't it? Or at least we've not found one yet.)

Well you're wrong because I don't like Pac-Man. It's not hard to dislike something but still recnogize it's merits. I don't like Opera but recognize the talent and effort behind it.
