Problems with burnt PSX games

Post by rattboi »

I need some help figuring out why some of my PSX ISOs don't work, or skip right after I burn. I'm using TDK media, and burning at 4x, the slowest allowable. Some of the games that have failed or skipped are from Underground Gamer, which I trust, so I'm pretty sure it's the media. Oh, btw, I'm using these on a modded PSone. I was thinking maybe it's having problems with the 80min media, or maybe it just doesn't like TDK? Any ideas, suggestions, etc?

Thanks for your help.

Edit: I should add a few details. All the ISOs I've tried have been CloneCD images, and I'm using the newest version of CloneCD. I'm using the "Game CD" function, that has "Don't fix sub-channel data" set to yes. I've downloaded a torrent from U-G called Square Mega Torrent, and on my TDK media, for example, Bushido Blade 2, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Einhander have worked. On the other hand, with the same media and the same torrent pack, Chrono Cross (disks 1 and 2), Xenogears, and Front Mission 3 haven't worked.

By PSOne you mean the slim model? If so, you should be having less problems than a big model to read 4x discs. Try buying some memorex black cdr, and try the games in a PC emulator.

If your your playstation is a big model, you should try burning at 2x, my big PSX won't read most 4x or 8x discs and my DC will read them with no problems at all (bless bleemcast for MGS)

yes, I meant the slim model when I said PSOne. That's what I'd always heard them referred to as. Memorex black cdr is better? Do you have any good or cheap links online, as I haven't seen any around here. Also, does the black actually matter in some way, or just to match PSX discs better?

Do the images run fine on an emulator?

Does your psone run legit games well?

Good questions. I'll take the "broken" discs to work tomorrow and try them out on EPSXE. As far as legit games working, I don't have any right now. I used to have a bunch back in the day, but my PSX was given to my little sister long ago, along with all the games. Now I'm trying to play some of the games I missed out on originally.

Goddamnit. I was late to work today, so I forgot to grab the discs. Anyways, I was thinking about it, and it comes down to 3 different options:

1. The images are bad in some way:
I don't think this is the case, because I just don't think that they'd keep them on Underground Gamer if they were damaged images.

2. My PSone optical drive is somehow damaged. This *could* be, but doesn't explain why some games work great, like FF9, but some games don't work at all, or barely, like Xenogears *almost* starts sometimes. This is on the exact same media, during the same burn session. I burned one, then the other with the same settings. I guess this is the likeliest of options though, since I'm using the same media. If this is in fact true, where would someone recommend I get a new optical drive?

3. I need better media. I burned a few games on some shitty Sony CDRs, and half of them didn't work. Now I'm using this TDK 52x 80min stuff that seems to work great for everything else. Perhaps, though, I should be using Memorex or Taiyo Yuden or whatever? I've seen a few people recommend these disks: http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/searchdetail.asp?productID=4529

Be aware that brand means virtually nothing, because most brands have budget media and high quality media. Most often, in retail stores, you'll find the budget media. But yes, I currently use Taiyo Yuden. I don't think they even have budget media. Great stuff. Never fails.

OK, I bought some TY 100-pack. If these don't work, I guess I'll either mess with the POT or get a new laser.
