SNES Classic coming September 29th

I would also like to buy one, but having most of the games in cart form, I don't feel the loss too much. That being said, it's a shame Nintendo is taking this "deprivation" route with gaming fans, all the while leaving a LOT of money sitting on the table.

Yeah, it's hard to argue against the idea of these being on some Switch VC service instead. Granted the quality of the Wii U emulation has been debunked now and proven to be terrible, but they maybe could have tried a little harder a third time around... people say the NES Classic quality was top notch so this will probably be the same. But couldn't they put that quality up digitally for download as well? Whelp... Nintendo. lol

I just don't know. But I think it would be neat to have this to carry around to friends places and such for some Contra fun and stuff.

Thinking a little more about the more obvious exclusions that seemed no brainers to old time SNES fans. It does seem like Nintendo only wants active franchises on these things.

Pilotwings is a dead franchise. Super Tennis isn't a franchise at all. No benefit whatsoever in putting these games on there as it won't lead to sales of modern versions of those games.

Kirby is probably the last Nintendo IP I'd associate with the SNES but Nintendo has new Kirby games coming out so better put two of his games on there for the exposure.

Looking at it from this persepective it becomes clearer and clearer that this is little more than a marketing and hype train and Nintendo really doesn't care about making profits from it. It's just another attempt to make it's old library seem valuable and rare...possibly before it launches some kind of Netflix style service for its back catalogue.

There's been games in the pilotwings franchise more recently than the Mother or F-Zero series - the most recent was a 3ds launch title. As a franchise it's referenced in the latest smash bros with a dedicated stage

Making an entire product, then making sure almost nobody can buy it, simply in the hope that it will lead to better sales of an entirely different product isn't a normal strategy I'm familiar with so I thought it was an interesting point of discussion.

I still don't see why you think I'm upset by it. I already bagged my preorder. I'm perfectly happy for Nintendo to sell me the exact nostalgia I crave in a tiny little box. I'm not going to buy a Switch because of it though...and I'm sure as heck not going to subscribe to Nintendoflix or whatever they come out with. I'll be interested to see if the strategy works for them.

That's cool, you don't have to. No one is putting a gun to your head and telling you to buy a switch and subscribe to their $20 a year service. I just am sensing an odd fixation is all. What glaring omissions are being left out of the snes classic? How do you know that the snes classic will have the same production issues the nes classic will have? Why care that much when you already are getting one?

I'm actually willing to give Ninty the benefit of doubt with the NES Mini (lol fanboy lol), to be honest.

I'm pretty sure their major issues with it were: 1. Communication and 2. Underestimating how much of a success it would be.

To elaborate on those two points, I think that Nintendo didn't intend for it to be a product with a long shelf life. It was just supposed to be a pre-Christmas gift they threw out there during the difficult pre-Christmas period where the Wii U was dead, the 3DS was slowly dying and the Switch was not yet out there. I don't think they anticipated people wanting to buy it in their droves. Why not make more? Probably because it doesn't actually create a huge turnover for them and they don't want to allocate resources to its production etc., whilst the Switch is probably making them far more money.

I don't know why everyone assumes the SNES Mini will be just as bad though. They've said they have learned from past mistakes and that they will produce far more of these units. Until it's released, although I'm hesitant, I do believe them.

Nailed it. Nintendo made a mistake with the nes mini and didn't realize just how huge of a deal it was for people. Honestly, before they announced it, were y'all thinking to yourself, "Man what I really want this year is a little nes replica with a bunch of games on it." No one was actively thinking that, so why would Nintendo expect such an enormous response.
