Is the Switch worth putting off getting a PS4?

I'd get a PS4 because it's a better Blu-Ray player than the one I currently have. And I bet if I'm streaming Amazon Video (don't have Prime yet), the quality won't drop to SD as much (happened when I streamed the new Power Rangers film last week). And a few of the Vita titles I own came with the PS4 versions. And there's PlayStation Now.
That's a good idea regarding some games you got from Vita purchases but as far as streaming goes, I dont think it's hardware related. Might be ISP related. NYC has some very good internet related companies. Just be careful of pricing.

Like a portable-ized Raspberry Pi? I've been thinking about it for a while, but still trying to figure out how to do the controls. A dedicated hotkey (I use Recalbox and I can map the hotkey to the Xbox button) is a must. And do I do a six face buttons with two shoulder buttons or four face and four shoulder?
I don't have much experience with this so I can't really help. Maybe someone else can answer. Personally, I take a bus to and from work since I don't live in Manhattan, only work. I live in a borough of NYC. My forms of entertainment is audiobooks. When I'm on the train, I don't listen, watch, or play anything. Stay alert. Stay alive. But if you need something: GBA is always a good option. At this point, the population has no idea what it is so they won't take it.

If I get a a WiiU, I'm softmodding it like I did my Wii (which got killed by flood water during the last major hurricane and is now in material possession heaven with damn near all my books and a huge chunk of my games). That way I can load it up with backups. But not for emulation. That's what my to-be-portable-ized Pi is for.
Also a great option. Zelda runs very well on it. Great set of games. You'll have plenty of options in the used game market. Sorry about you losing your stuff. I lost a bunch of stuff during Sandy a few years ago so I know the feeling.

Anyway. Good luck for when you come to NYC. It's a great place to be!

I've yet to see a Switch on the subway. Most people play on their phones, and only every once in a while will I see someone on a Vita or 3DS. It's very rare. And such a relief, too. Too many New Yorkers don't bother with headphones for games. It's quite annoying.

I've only seen the Switch in a public space just once: about three weeks after release, a teenager was walking up 8th Avenue near 34th Street. Given the time of day (PM rush hour) and the area (near a transit hub) I was shocked he was able to use it and not run into anybody or have it snatched.

Who's to say he still has it?

To be fair, though, I think electronics snatching has gone down a bit. Or at least I don't hear about it as much as I did a few years ago.

I always thought it was odd to sell a Switch on ebay sans charger/dock or box for that matter.
(never actually seen this btw but if you see a listing like that... Well one can put two and two together)

True. I don't hear about it anymore. I still don't display stuff out in the open though. Can't be too sure nowadays.

There were tons of people who were out late at night in weird areas looking for Pokemon who were getting their phones jacked because they weren't paying attention to their surroundings. There was even a video of some guy livestreaming it when he got robbed in Central Park at midnight.
