IMO, it's more a matter of thinking past the current hardware. MS and Sony, at least from 7th gen, have been more account based, at least potentially. Purchases are tied to that, not the console itself. Similar, of course, to how PC gaming purchases are tied to accounts - I can still play my copy of Half-Life 2 I set my Steam account up for.
So while the current end result of MS's efforts might be easy to dismiss for those of us with 360s still hanging around...what about in another five, ten years or more? The direction MS seems to be going is that Xbox content will stay usable on whatever their current hardware is. Sony, on the other hand, seems more content to wipe the slate clean between generations. They had some things - PSOne Classics that'd play on PS3, PSP, and Vita for instance - but haven't continued that effort.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Microsoft is letting the end user know that your time and money you invest in their products is not wasted and will stay with your account under their brand.
Sony on the other hand just says thanks for the money, want to do it again on the PS5? Honestly this is something I hear people complain about with nintendo, having to buy games over and over each gen, but nobody mentions it with sony. I've also read that backwards compatibility is sony's most requested feature, to just ignore the fan base that way seems counter intuitive.
Re: The PS4 thread
Xbox has backwards compatibility
Sony has way more games and some backwards compatibility by buying digital.
I would rather keep a few old consoles around and have way more games to play. Plus the about 500 games I have accumulated through plus. Other than compatibility for some older games that most people are not playing Xbox has nothing going for it.

Playstation 4 backwards compatibility

Re: The PS4 thread
Actually I have one ps3 that plays 1,2 and 3. Then my PS4. Also I don't have to download anything to play older games

I've still got my PS3 and my PS2. Those along with my PS Vita and PSP cover all my PlayStation needs.

Re: The PS4 thread
My bad guys, with the Sony execs saying that BC is heavily requested but people don't actually use it, I just figured no one actually used that feature of the ps3.
Re: The PS4 thread
My fully backwards compatible PS3 is all I use for 1, 2 and 3.
There is no hard feeling or anything. I was just pointing out that Sony has given it to us in the past. Not as big a deal as with Microsoft in their minds. The thing I think is strange is that when Sony did it with the PS3 the 1 and 2 were like 99 % compatible. Microsoft goes on about how big a deal it is and they cannot touch that percentage.
With a group like us who play our older games this is a big deal being able to continue to play them. From my experience with other people though is that once they are done with a game that is it. It either goes back to gamestop or collects dust till I buy it at a garage sale LOL
Would be nice if sony would patch games to let them run on later systems but it does not seem likely. I do say good job on Microsoft for offering these things. If they were to step up and bring more games that were exclusive they would be formidable. I think it is sad that most people buying Xbox are buying just for the few offerings like Halo or Gears. After that the curve drops really fast. I want Microsoft to succeed, we need an american company in the market. It just seems like they just do not care or think that people will just continue to buy their stuff. I wish I had a reason to turn on my Xbox One.
They need to loosen up restriction and let companies like limited run sell physical copies. Maybe they could offer something to other companies to make games exclusive to them, or at least port games to them also. Looking at Persona 5 wondering why no Xbox?!?!?
I have the Xbox and the PS4, there are just simply more games available on my PS4. So much more that I never have time to play my older games anyway LOL

Re: The PS4 thread
Somewhat what wclem is getting at, especially for those of us here at RB into playing older games... are you guys telling me that you've dumped everything before the PS4? My PS3, which has been my main for the PS1 for years now, and my PS2 are not going anywhere. Sure you need a few extra inputs, but a simple HDMI splitter and HDMI upscaler for the PS2 did the simple trick for me, so I have the PS2, PS3, and PS4 all hooked up at once along with other systems. A lot of people sure slam Sony on the PS4, when they're offering slightly enhanced versions of PS2 games on the PSN store, and did BC the last two generations. I won't be surprised if the next system can do PS4, since hardware is more universal now. That's probably why the PS4 can't do PS3, with its crazy Cell tech inside.
On the other hand it's lame they split the PSN store.
Not really trying to excuse anything here... but I've never really seen the big deal and I get confused about how vocal people get sometimes as if they immediately sell off all their old hardware and the old becomes moot when the new stuff is out. This is my exact counter argument for the XOX right now, sure it's great that it might play all the old stuff, but my Xbox and 360 still work perfectly and nothing new on the XOX itself is interesting. So I see no reason to upgrade yet.

Re: The PS4 thread
I still have my 360, but I have limited space by my main tv, only enough room for two or maybe three consoles. It's nice to have the Xbone hooked up and still be able to play my 360 games and have that space available for another console.
I get vocal about it because the world seems to look down on the Xbox one, I have an Xbox one...I feel obligated to defend my console of choice. I don't think less of the ps4, I just want people to think more of the Xbone. Sometimes it takes a little good natured play ground ribbing to get a word in with the Sony fans though.
