Sub or Dub
Re: Sub or Dub
Most of the time i go with the sub version but i do enjoy a good dub and some series like Persona and Disagea i always play with the English audio. I used to be against dubs but now even with anime i always like to check the English audio first if i have the chance. Certain type of shows work better with English audio for me.
Re: Sub or Dub
I prefer dubs cause I can eat n drink without having to read subtitles. Imagine spilling soup while watching the text. I have seen subtitles in theaters without problem. I just want to enjoy my experience. I don't know why people complain by horrible dubbing, it's fun to watch. People expect to much for an accurate dub, hard enough.

Re: Sub or Dub
Almost always prefer subs. Dubs sometimes can still be a little cringe worthy for me, so I just would rather not take the chance most of the time. I especially don't like dubs when there is a little girl character, since often that translates into screechy awfulness.
Also since I know some Japanese, it can be fun to pick up a few words here and there.

I imagine had I not lost the college skills I had in Japanese I'd probably be more open to a few subs at least in games as I could read along side and learn some more words. I used to have a low grade level vocab and a decent level of grammar comprehension and it's mostly all but shot.

Quoting for the new page. Do you guys seriously think this is okay?Xeogred wrote:Brace for cringe!
Hope this one is dual audio again like the first.
Re: Sub or Dub
No. The voice actors sound awful (well at least the main two) and the main character especially doesn't sound like good fit. The "take thiiiis" line was almost chuckle worthy.Xeogred wrote:Quoting for the new page. Do you guys seriously think this is okay?Xeogred wrote:Brace for cringe!

Re: Sub or Dub
Some bad dubs give us unintentional masterpieces like Cyber City.
Warning: Crude language
Seriously if you ever have a chance to see this short OVA dubbed it's amazing. They tried so hard to be cool end edgy. Every other word is a swear.

Re: Sub or Dub
That's not cringe worthy it's amusing. Also if someone hadn't watched a sub or could understand the original they're likely not going to care.
I really wish the whole vocal minority on this sub vs dub thing would chill as you know better than the poeple doing things. Sure you can have an occasional misfire, but to whine for every game that comes out of Japan that you could do better or this guy could do better just comes off a petty.
Be happy the media was even brought over in the first place in those times so people who don't want to learn Japanese or read while trying to watch a cartoon can enjoy it.

Re: Sub or Dub
I don't know that anyone seriously thinks THEY could do better than a voice actor (except maybe for Last Alert on TG-16). But the number of really good dubs out there are proof that some of the most hated dubs could have been improved, in some cases a great deal. Escaflowne? Horrible dub. Could have been much better. How do I know? There's tons of shit out there that has better dubs. But it's not always the actors. Sometimes its the voice directory, or even the Japanese licensor. Some Japanese companies want to have final approval on a dub and they may make bad choices, in part because English isn't their native language.Tanooki wrote:Sure you can have an occasional misfire, but to whine for every game that comes out of Japan that you could do better or this guy could do better just comes off a petty.
Dubbing is complicated. It's not an easy task. Subtitles are tons easier. Subtitles just have to communicate meaning. Dubs have to do that and sound natural, and match the animated lip flaps, and then be acted with appropriate emotional responses. So while we can complain that a dub could have been a lot better, we shouldn't fall into the trap of complaining a dub could easily have been better. Even a bad dub is a lot of work. A good dub is more work.
