I don't know...I write much more formally here than I do in any papers I submit to a court of law. Much like the late Oliver Wendell Holmes, many of my strongest memoranda begin with "ur arugment is stup1d!!!!111!!!" followed by a string of emojis.

The key points enumerated in Wikipedia don't seem to directly touch upon the intellect, nor does it seem to weigh in on adult usage (but rather explain that text usage among children is not damaging).marurun wrote:This book (a friend gifted it to me, he works for Mozilla and occasionally uses shorthand) is my primary source for that claim.

Are those two points specifically addressed in the book, and if so, does he cite studies to back them?

I read that book a couple years ago, but the author does reference a number of studies. He is, himself, an academic. I don't think he would get far without doing so. But, text usage patterns have changed. It's possible more recent research is exposing more detail. I'm really not interested in going down this particular rabbit hole.o.pwuaioc wrote:The key points enumerated in Wikipedia don't seem to directly touch upon the intellect, nor does it seem to weigh in on adult usage (but rather explain that text usage among children is not damaging).marurun wrote:This book (a friend gifted it to me, he works for Mozilla and occasionally uses shorthand) is my primary source for that claim.

We all know Judges are playing Candy Crush behind the bench. It's so tall so you can't see them doing so.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I don't know...I write much more formally here than I do in any papers I submit to a court of law. Keep in mind South Korea has built a large part of its economy with our presence as the lynchpin. After half a centry it wouldent be an easy break. My prediction is barring a coup, North Korea will actually over time lessen their stance and perhaps a few generations from now in a joint effort dismantle the dprk.marurun wrote:Now, North Korea's strategy is not particularly likely to actually work as they intend, but it does provide them with some leverage and some forward momentum. And if the DPRK manages to goad us into war, or at least sustained military action (because I don't think congress would be willing to declare war), South Korea stands to lose the most in the short term unless we completely dismantle the DPRK.

That's not an unlikely assessment. Most likely the high ranking military officers and government officials who have not committed crimes against humanity(ie. been involved with North Korea's penal system or human experimentation) would naturally do well if the border were opened and the economy allowed to flourish. After all, they're already in positions of influence and know the principal actors of their region.
The problem comes from the Kim family though, which wants to maintain their hold on power indefinitely and are willing to assassinate their own if it means keeping control. That said, a coup isn't entirely unlikely.
The real question is whether China would allow any of this to happen. They've already made several vague territorial and cultural claims to areas of North Korea that they would likely act on in the event of regime change, and they most definitely do not want an economic powerhouse on their northern doorstep which is allied with their main competitor and also ideally placed to do business with another major player who could serve as a potential ally or future competition. North Korea is also quite heavy in key natural resources which will interest them, so they're not going to simply sit still if things go the friendly route.
And China's continued interest in North Korea will likely become more important as relations between Vietnam, Japan, and the US continue to improve while Vietnamese relations with China deteriorate. The pro-China faction of the Vietnamese government has been slowly losing ground to the pro-US faction, and high ranking Vietnamese officials have been meeting more often and making defense deals and pacts with other nations in the region. In fact General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong and President Tran Dai Quang met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe earlier this year, while Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with his Japanese counterpart about a week ago.
In fact Phuc also just met with President Trump, while Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited Vietnam in February. China cannot be happy with these developments involving their southern neighbor.

So...did anybody watch the Sessions hearing? I caught only parts of it, and what I heard was a mix of softball and stonewalling.
