Started watching some Cutie Honey, keeping things Go Nagai themed whenever the Mazinger-thon starts to wear on me. I've been pleasantly surprised at just how fun it is. I've seen some of the later versions but never the original. It's so wonderfully 70's and does a good job at being cute, sexy and action packed. Don't even get me started on that theme song...

I can definitely see how Kill la Kill was a modern combination of this and a dash of Devilman.

Speaking of which I've been living under a rock but I just found out about the new Devilman anime coming to Netflix next year which will be faithful to the manga so that's super hype.

There's the comics thread but I think you could argue manga stuff might be more at home in here.

Yeah I love manga too much to degrade it into a "comics" thread.

I've been meaning to watch the original Cutie Honey for a while. The Shin stuff was rad.

I've only seen Re: Cutie Honey. But yes, the theme song is totally rad.

I liked 70's Cutie Honey a bit more than the the first season of Lupin. Similar vibes but Cutie Honey was a bit more out there. Super colorful and cool looking stuff.

I haven't gotten around to it yet either. Some casual anime fans have told me it was amazing while some Gundam fans have told me it's not so hot. I don't know what to make of that.

One of my friends liked it.
One of my friends didn't like it.

So that doesn't help. ;)

It's pretty different though. Like I don't know if there's any Haro's around, or Newtype-esque people. Except the pilots have these weird spikes in their backs that plugs into the pilot seats, so that's their excuse for being able to pull off human like movement and reactions in the mobile suits. Music is very so-so and I noticed the composer is like 30's something, so pretty young and new. Plot seems kind of small in scale, it reminds me of X in ways so far but doesn't quite have that charm. But it's basically just been following this small group of youngsters trying to travel from Mars to Earth with an important lady that will help them fight for Mars' independence. It's small skirmish stuff and not really full out war. The action has been fairly cool and creative, like using tethered strings to propel themselves around asteroids, captains using the ships to fly by others or scrape them up, lots of melee combat, it's all pretty dirty and rough in a cool way if that makes sense. The mobile suits get really banged up and still seem fragile in between some episodes.

I'm 8 episodes in. I guess this one has a time leap and split season format as well like 00, which worries me a bit, but who knows.

00 in comparison seemed way bigger in scope, the tactical action was really cool and I liked all the MS designs in that one, I still think the first season was pretty solid all around but that second season sabotaged everything. It was a bit too serious for its own good too. So I guess IBO being a bit more tame after that might not be a terrible thing. Feels like it might be an alright 7/10 so far.

Either way, modern anime has come to this reality that Gundam is the only franchise that still hits some of those checkboxes I love, like no school bullshit, space drama and travel, and an emphasis on military shenanigans. So as average as the franchise has been, it will probably always keep pulling me back. lol

Did you see Thunderbolt got a second season? And maybe Origin finishes up soon this year, though I still don't think I need more context around the 0079 events. Either way, the UC OVA's always seem to be pretty solid though.

I've heard good things about Thunderbolt S2 so far. I've not really been feeling Origin. Too much, "did you know Char is cool? Char is so cool!"
